sired reactions, except for a very small number of women. It is therefore of interest–at least speculatively–to use the genistein as an anti-oestrogen substance in the endometrial hyperplasia of perimenopause. Based on the data in the literature, we report personal experiences, already published in international journals, about the efficacy of genistein for menopausal symptoms, bone turnover and safety.

Background: Many studies have shown the positive effect of acupuncture in in vitro fertilisation (IVF) outcome, and a recent review claims that acupuncture can bring about one additional clinical pregnancy among 10 women treated. It is well known that previous outcome of IVF is an important negative prognostic factor in the pregnancy outcome, associated with other factors such as woman’s age and semen quality. Aim: To present a case-control, non–randomised, unblinded study whose aim was to evaluate the role of acupuncture in a selected group of women characterised by previous cycle of IVF that failed in spite of an adequate production of good quality and quantity embryos. Methods: The study group included 30 women who were referred to Futura PMA Centre with at least one previous IVF failure and a mean of 1.7 repeated failures, and they were treated with acupuncture before pick up and after embryo transfer. We compared the study group pregnancy rate at transfer both with a same characteristics control group that did not undergo acupuncture and with the standard result of all the patients referred to the Centre in the same period. Results: The study group had a significant increment of pregnancy rate compared with the control group and that reached the same pregnancy rate (30%) of the centre standard result, even if the study group were composed of patients with lower success rates. Conclusion: Compared with other studies, the present study confirms the role of acupuncture in IVF outcome, especially in patients with less favourable prognosis due to repeated failure. This finding can be related to the critical role that acupuncture may play in embryo implantation and in the lutheal phase support.
OP-100 An integrated protocol in a premature ovarian failure: case report Riviello Chiara, Coccia Elisabetta A 38-year-old woman with a history of 4 years of infertility presented an idiopathic premature ovarian failure, diagnosed by oligomenorrhoea, two determinations of day 3 follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) above 40 U l−1 and ultrasound findings of homogeneous ovaries. To achieve her reproductive desire, she was suggested to undergo to in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with egg donations, but she decided to refer to acupuncture treatment. After 4 weeks of treatment, she underwent an intravaginal ultrasound that showed a pre-ovulatory follicle and she was suggested to have sexual intercourse. The second phase of cycle was supported with 600 mg of intravaginal micronised progesterone and acupuncture. The woman became pregnant, but she had a miscarriage at 12 weeks due to a chromosomal anomaly. After uterine curettage, she experienced 2 months of amenorrhoea, and she underwent acupuncture treatment andhad a period 3 weeks later. She started an integrated protocol of psychological support, acupuncture and ultrasound ovarian monitoring and after 4 weeks she presented with three atrial follicles count in each ovary. At 15 days of cycle, given the presence of a preovulatory follicle, she was administrated human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and she was suggested to have sexual intercourse. The second phase of cycle was supported with 600 mg of intravaginal micronised progesterone and with acupuncture. She became pregnant and, currently, she is at 7 weeks of gestation, with a good increment of beta HCG. The present case report is a good example of integration between Chinese and Occidental medicines as regards the diagnostic step (identification of a preovulatory follicle by ultrasound) and the therapeutic step (acupuncture and progesterone to support the lutheal phase). Even if the sample size is limited to only one case, the result shows that acupuncture may play an important role in functional ovarian failure and in the reproductive outcome http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.eujim.2012.07.595

Riviello Scuola di Agopuntura Tradizionale della Città di Firenze, Florence, Italy Background: Premature ovarian failure (POF) or premature menopause refers to development of amenorrhoea due to cessation of ovarian function before the age of 40 years. The diagnosis is based on elevated follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels in the menopausal range (usually above 40 IU ml−1 ) detected on at least two occasions a few weeks apart. The condition is associated with anovulation, hypoestrogenism, primary or more
