L’Oreal aims to become world leader on shampoo market L’Oreal aims to dethrone Procter & Gamble as the leader on the world haircare market. L’Oreal currently derives 36% of its €20.34 bn turnover from shampoos, hair colorants and other hair products. The French group has invested €100 M in a new hair research centre at Saint-Ouen, France. L’Oreal is focusing on the Brazilian, Indian and Chinese markets. It has invested €25 M in research facilities at Mumbai and Bangalore. A new research facility is to be opened in the Brazilian state of Rio in 2014 at a cost of €28 M. Toxicity tests sans animals Cosmetics maker L’Oreal will outlay $1.2 M to help the US EPA’s Office of Research & Development advance ToxCast, its high-throughput chemical screening system. As part of the agreement, the EPA will use the system to test 20 chemicals contained in L’Oreal products to determine the reliability of ToxCast in predicting the toxicity of the chemicals, including surfactants and dyes. including cancer and developmental and reproductive effects. The system relies on models built upon the results of hundreds of biological assays. It has been validated with numerous pesticides and other chemicals with expansive animal toxicity data. The EPA says the ultimate purpose of ToxCast is to diminish the use of animal-intensive, time-consuming toxicity tests. The agency is contemplating using ToxCast in regulatory decisions.

Henkel and computer-aided screening specialist 4SC Discovery have agreed a research collaboration in the area of compound screening. The aim of the joint project is to identify new and more effective laundry detergent ingredients. 4SC Discovery will perform property calculations for several million substances. Henkel will then use application testing to determine the substances most suitable for new detergent formulations. Compound screening with 4SC Discovery will allow Henkel to subject a much higher volume of substances to testing during the early stages of product development than has previously been possible, the company explains. According to 4SC Discovery, the partnership with Henkel is the first time that its procedure has been used to drive ‘the rapid and efficient development of new detergent compounds’.
