ANA plans action for better patient care

Professional collective action to improve patient care i s the goal of the American Nurses' Association (ANA), which i s starting a campaign to organize the nation's 800,000 active registered nurses. "We are mobilizing the single largest group of health professionals to achieve the highest possible quality of care for all Americans," said ANA president Rosamond C Gabrielson. "The association will commit substantial financial resources to support the 52 constituent nurses' associations to bring about collective bargaining in each health care facility."

Ms Gabrielson said the collective bargaining will focus on improving the quality of nursing care provided to people. In the past, ANA's collective bargaining efforts have focused mainly on improving salaries, fringe benefits, and working con-

ditions. These initial efforts have made it possible to now broaden the scope of bargaining, ANA reports. "Through ANA's vigorous campaign," Ms Gabrielson commented, "the thrust will be broadened to improve the quality of nursing care, to assure the public of the individual and collective accountability of qualified professional nurses, and to increase the accessibility of health care services for the public. By acting as a cohesive group, rather than as individual professionals, nurses will achieve the right to make decisions that affect them, their practice and the quality of care."

Ms Gabrielson's remarks resulted from a meeting of ANA's commission on economic and general welfare with representatives of ANA's 52 constituent associations in Kansas City, Mo, Nov 14 and 15.
