Book review Analysis of Health Surveys Edward L. Korn and Barry I. Graubard; Wiley, New York, 1999, 382pp. Price $94.50, ISBN 0471137731 This is a very interesting and useful book that deals exclusively with health surveys. Many important national surveys were discussed throughout the book to exemplify the complex nature of the survey designs. Basic survey methodology was introduced in Chapter 2, which provides a fairly complete coverage on existing sampling plans and procedures. Replication methods of variance estimation are also brie9y discussed in this chapter. In Chapter 3, standard statistical inferences for survey data are covered. Additional issues such as weighted vs. unweighted estimates, imputation for missing data, and generalized variance functions are included in Chapters 4 and 5. Second half of the book is devoted to topics such as, cross-sectional analysis, analysis of longitudinal surveys, analyses using multiple surveys, and population-based case–control studies. At the end of the chapters, there are exercises designed to supplement the materials introduced in the main body of the book. Appendix A provides necessary information of the surveys analyzed in this book. And, most importantly, the reference section includes an abundance of useful references from the statistical literature, which provides additional source of information for serious researchers. This book is simple enough for practitioners that do not equip with sophisticated level of training in mathematics. The level of mathematics is rudimentary. The exercises are useful also in the sense that they illustrate many real examples in sample surveys. Readers would ?nd this to be an excellent introductory level text in sample surveys with application in health care research. For health care researchers that conduct or analyze surveys without rigorous training in mathematics, this would absolutely be the book to use to gain useful insight or ideas from survey data.
