EDITORIAL Analytical Biochemistry Volume 200: Where We Were; Where We Stand Alvin Nason recognized that the biochemical community would benefit from a forum specializing in analytical techniques, and for almost two decades served as the editor of the journal he founded, Analytical Biochemistry. Upon his death in 1977, Nathan Kaplan and William McElroy jointly headed the journal and pointed it to an even larger base: Analytical Biochemistry became a source for general methods in the biochemical sciences. In keeping with this broader mandate, executive editors who had specialized knowledge in the diverse fields that make up the modern aspects of our science were appointed. When the editorship changed again in 1987, this structure was retained and our interest was expanded to methods as they apply to the service of biology. With the appearance of Volume 200 of Analytical Biochemistry after 32 years of publication, we can look back on a revolution in approaches, techniques, and instruments that has been recognized and recorded in these pages. The sources are global; slightly more than half of the submitted manuscripts are from outside the United States. The journal has created a role for itself and has experienced the flattery of serving as an example for new publications with similar specialization. As has been true since the first issue, Volume 200 is intended to serve science by providing critically evaluated articles and reviews on methods. Such changes as have occurred over time have not altered the standards of excellence. The number of papers submitted each year and the number accepted have remained stable over the past decade despite turnover of the Editorial Board. It will be evident from the following list of editors who have served over the years that this journal has had the benefit of sound and critical evaluation. We work hard at being fair. We obviously try to make judicious choices during the review process but know that we are dealing in value judgments and expect that mistakes will be made: a few good papers are declined and some less so are printed. The entire enterprise depends on the quality of the work that is presented for review-the quality of the material you offer us. For the future we, the editors and the publisher, continue to extend our invitation, to you and to the next generation of investigators, for manuscripts that record your innovative work on the methods applicable to the biological sciences.
