CHROM. 4185 Analytical Reaction Gas Chromatography, by V. G. BEREZKIN, (translated ETTRE), Plenum Press, New York, 1968,193 pp., price $12.50.
by L. S. ..
Reaction gas chromatography is a rapidly developing branch of analytical chemistry. Several techniques combining GLC with chemical reactions have been developed. As a rule a new element, the reactor, appears at a stage of the chromatographic analysis : e.g. in or before the inlet; in the column; before or after the detector. In this way the useful area of gas chromatography is extended as for example to the analysis of polymers by GC. The scope of this book is restricted to the analytical use of reaction gas chromatography and its use for the study of reaction kinetics of thermal and catalytic reactions is only briefly discussed. Among the subjects clearly discussed are : the analysis of complex mixtures of different classes of components; the analysis of ‘labile components; hydrogenation and dehydrogenation ; analysis of relatively involatile components; specific chemical r’eactions for qualitative analysis; the use of chemically active sorbents. In the opinion of the reviewer the book pays too little attention to pyrolysis-gas chromatography, the most common reaction-GC technique, and it does not mention the excellent literature reviews covering that field.
