Ando Soils in Japan. Koji Wada (Editor), Kyushu University Press, Hakozaki, Fukuoka, 1986, xxiv + 276 pp., ISBN 4-87378-129-9 C3061, 10,000 Yen, ca. US$ 65.00 (hardback). Soils formed on volcanic ash under a temperate, humid climate have distinctive properties that are not formed in soils derived from other parent materials. They are called "Ando soils". Volcanic materials erupting from different volcanoes, however, are not the same, and even in the case of the same volcano, materials are different according to the era of the eruption. The process of weathering as well as the end products are different under varying climatic conditions also. Therefore, in the field of taxonomy, Ando soils are one of the so-called problem soils and will be a main topic in the forthcoming 9th International Soil Classification workshop. From the stand point of agriculture, thought the distribution of this soil throughout the world is not so large in acreage, it is widely distributed in volcanic countries and plays an important role for supporting highly populated regions, especially in the developing countries. Moreover, the chemical properties of this soil are not suitable for agriculture and it requires amelioration and skilful management after reclamation. Ando Soils in Japan has been written for the purpose of clarifying profile descriptions and the physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics of typical Ando soils in Japan. The main contents are: (1) Morphology and Classification, by M. Otowa; (2) Mineralogical Characteristics - - Primary Minerals, by S. Shoji, and Clay Minerals, by N. Yoshinaga; (3) Humus Characteristics, by S. Arai, T. Honna and Y. Oba; (4) Chemical Properties, by K. Inoue; (5) Physical Properties, by T. Maeda and K. Soma; (6) Data Base (Properties and Analytical Data of Pedons ). Writers of these articles are leading soil scientists in Japan in their respective disciplines. The reviewer believes that this book is most suitable for understanding the pedological characteristics of Ando soils. YOSHIAKI ISHIZUKA (Sapporo, Hokkaido)
