Alliance Pharmaceutical to pursue study of Oxygent for organ protection during major surgery Alliance Pharmaceutical Corp announced its intent to pursue a Proof of Concept Study related to the use of Oxygent, which is based on its proprietary PFC and surfactant technologies, for organ protection during major surgery. Alliance previously entered into an Exclusivity Agreement in Dec 2004 with LEO Pharma A/S by which LEO obtained the right to enter into a definitive licence agreement for the development and commercialization of Oxygent. According to an amendment, dated 25 Feb 2005, entry into this definitive licence agreement with LEO is conditional upon the results of the above-outlined Proof of Concept Study. Alliance had been seeking the consent of its Lender Committee to commence that study. However, the cash covenant ceases to apply on the date that Alliance enters into a binding agreement for the joint development of Oxygent with a Qualified Third Party, obligating the third party to make certain payments or undertake certain activities. On 13 May 2005, Alliance entered into a Development, Licence and Supply Agreement with Beijing Double-Crane Pharmaceutical Co Ltd for the development and commercialization of Oxygent in China. hydration and reducing insensible water loss. Lipidure C, which is used in both skincare and haircare applications, provides very good affinity for proteins. It protects coloured hair from dehydration by forming a hydrogel that holds water on the hair’s surface. It also improves the conditioning power of shampoos. Lipidure-NR and Lipidure-NA can form nanometric lamellar structures when applied and dried on the substrate. Parfums, Cosmetiques, Actualites, Apr-May 2005, (182), 132

Genencor debuts new protease enzyme Genencor International has introduced a new protease, PURAFECT Prime, for use worldwide in a wide variety of liquid detergent formulations. In tests, the new product demonstrates higher yield efficiency in heavy-duty liquid (HDL) formulations, provides improved stain removal and offers enhanced cleaning performance at low temperatures, says Genencor. The new product removes some of the toughest and most frequently occurring protein-based stains in laundry, such as blood, egg, milk products containing cocoa, and grass. The protease’s superior efficiency translates into equal performance at lower dosage than standard proteases, or higher performance at equal dosage to standard. The actual impact is dependent on the HDL formulation and application conditions. In tests at Genencor and independent laboratories, PURAFECT Prime shows improved soil removal at low temperatures ranging from 20-40 degC in typical European and North American wash conditions. This is key since an increasing number of consumers in these areas are washing clothes at lower temperatures to maintain fabric quality and reduce energy consumption. The new product also demonstrates a significant improvement in storage stability and
APPLICATIONS Household & personal care Angus Chemical ups capacity of EUcompliant amino alcohols Angus Chemical, a Dow Chemical subsidiary, has expanded capacity for speciality amino alcohols at Ibbenbueren, Germany. The extra capacity will help meet increased demand caused by EU restrictions and amendments concerning cosmetics ingredients. The products are in accord with the EU’s cosmetics directive, which demands greater purity for these additives. Products include buffers for skin and eye care, tromethamine and neutralizing amines for hair and personal care items. The product line, known as Ultra PC, are formulation ‘drop-in replacements’. The products were launched in Europe in 2004, and are now available in N America. Chemical Week, 18 May 2005, 167 (17), (Website: http://www.chemweek.com)
