NEWS HS100-10 Contactless Hybrid Finger Scanner (HS100-10) is scheduled to begin in May. The HS100-10’s simultaneous acquisition of both fingerprint and finger vein information strengthens authentication and the contactless sensor is robust in use with fingers that are dry or moist, which is difficult for conventional contact-based fingerprint authentication devices. The HS100-10’s USB interface allows users to connect to a PC in order to log on to its operating system or unlock its screensaver in both a stand-alone environment and an ActiveDirectory environment. It is compatible with major access management software, including IBM’s Tivoli Access Manager for Enterprise Single Sign-On and Novell’s Novell SecureLogin.

Facial recognition reveals Canadian driver crime

C

anadian driver and vehicle licensing body ICBC has revealed that its implementation of facial recognition technology has had a dramatic impact on reducing identity theft and fraud. The technology enables ICBC to compare a cardholder’s image with their image on file and with an entire database of millions of images and works by analysing facial characteristics that do not change, such as the size and location of cheekbones and the distance between the eyes. Cases of identity theft and fraud uncovered in 2010 through the use of facial recognition technology included that of a woman who attended the local driver licensing centre and took a road test in the name of her sister. Facial recognition technology matched her image to her own driver’s licence and it transpired she had been prohibited from driving.

Animetrics offers facial recognition for iPhone and Android

A

nimetrics , developer of 3D imaging technologies for facial biometric systems, is offering FaceR CredentialME in Apple’s iPhone App store and FaceR CredentialME AppLock in Google’s Android market. The Android App, CredentialME AppLock FaceR CredentialME AppLock enables the Android smartphone user to use facial recognition as the biometric authentication to unlock any application installed on the user’s Android device. CME AppLock provides the options of either letting the device camera automatically take a picture of the user’s face and verify via face recognition or to use a password to secure the user’s choice of applications on the handset. FaceR CredentialME for the iPhone has the same face recognition and authentication features as the Android CredentialME AppLock except it does not control securing individual applications on the iPhone. Both applications can be used as second factor authentication via third party applications. With the advancement of smartphones it seems likely that more data and personal information will be stored and accessed directly from the end user’s mobile phone. Paul Schuepp, president and CEO for Animetrics, says, “We’re carrying in our pocket now full functioning powerful computing and communications devices with integrated applications that run our businesses, our social networks, our life. It has become most important to protect our applications so that only I can use my private and personal apps.” Enterprises and consumers can use this tool to secure mobile systems via a wireless connection to a cloud-based security solution.
