Samples have been retrieved, mineralogy established, and triaxial compression tests carried out on air dry and water saturated samples. Effects of confining pressure (to 60MPa) and water content on stress strain relations have been examined, and elastic, transitional, and brittle-plastic zones delineated.

A BASIC computer program has been developed capable of controlling and recording up to I I triaxial tests simultaneously. It allows the user to interrupt while it is running so that tasks can be altered. The program maintains two 'long files' in order to organise tests and store test data. For each test. two data files are produced: the raw data read from test and the output data file with engineering units. Details on design and application of the program are presented.

Recovery of oil from oil shales is dependent on many mechanical and physical properties. Some, including fragmentation, show strain rate dependency. Effects of strain rate on uniaxial strength, initial average Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio were examined in the laboratory at strain rates up to values close to explosive. Complicated stress paths can be followed. Results are presented for three clay soils. Stress strain anisotropy of the soil was analysed. Finite element analysis of settlement of a strip footing is presented in which effect of the measured anisotropy is included by allocating to each element a suitable modulus according to the orientations of the principal stress. The squeeze test was developed for rapid determination of average strength and deformation characteristics of wet, soft soils. The test and apparatus are described, and results compared to those for strength measurements on 36 soil samples using undrained unconsolidated compression, direct shear, or cone index tests. Squeeze test shear strengths at failure are slightly greater than those from other tests as the average strength is determined. The test is considered particularly suitable for use in off-road mobility research.

A programme of pressuremeter, plate loading and laboratory tests was conducted in the trial excavation in very weak to moderately weak breccia as part of the geotechnical investigation for the port of Jebel Ali, Dubai. During and after construction of the concrete block-work walls, measurements were made of their settlement, which permitted calculation of the deformation modulus of the underlying breccia. A comparison of results from different methods of measuring deformation modulus is presented.
