In keeping with previous World Congresses on Fluency Disorders The aim of the Fourth Congress is to bring together clinicians, researchers, people who stutter, and other interested parties to discuss theoretical, empirical, clinical, and cultural approaches to fluency disorders. The program will consist of sessions devoted to special themes, mini-seminars, research sessions, clinical sessions short courses and poster sessions.

Location The Congress will take place at The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel, 900 Réné Lévesque Boulevard, Montreal, Quebec H3B 4A5. There will be special package rates for congress registrants. Participants may stay at the congress hotel or at hotels and bed and breakfasts nearby. Information on hotel registration will be included in the February 2003 announcement and details will be available at http//www.ifacongress2003.com

Official Language The official language of the Congress is English. (Authors who would otherwise not be able to participate may present in French and submit abstracts and summaries in French. The intention is to provide simultaneous translation of French presentations.) La langue officielle du Congr`es est l’anglais. L’abrégé, le résumé ainsi que la présentation devront se faire en anglais. Dans le cas où le conférencier est dans l’impossibilité de présenter en anglais, la présentation, l’abrégé et le résumé pourront se faire en français. Proceedings The proceedings of the Congress will be published. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to prepare a manuscript for inclusion in the proceedings. Details about preparation of manuscripts will be sent to authors at the time of acceptance of the submission.

Second Announcement A second announcement will be mailed in February 2003. This will include the preliminary conference program, a conference registration form and information about hotel accommodation.

Request For Presentation Submissions for presentations related to all aspects of fluency disorders are welcome. Submissions is on the efficacy and the effectiveness of intervention, best practice, and multi-cultural and multi-lingual issues will be of particular interest.

Program Session Types Submitted contributions are invited from Congress participants. Five different formats for presentations are available: 1. Research Paper (15 minutes including discussion time) Presentations will include specific data-based results and a discussion of the important findings of the study. 2. Mini-seminar (30 minutes including discussion time) This type of session will include reports of experimental research, clinical techniques, application of research to clinical processes. 3. Seminar / Short Course (90 minutes including discussion time) Reports by research teams, descriptions of innovative clinical programs and debates on issues in fluency disorders, are examples of proposals for this type of session. This type of session might include panel discussions, demonstration, and symposia. The presented topics will have broad appeal. 4. Double Seminar / Double Course (180 minutes including time) Double sessions are designed for continuing education and should focus on clinical issues for large audiences. The instructional value of the double sessions must be clear. 5. Poster Presentation (research or clinical) Poster sessions are most appropriate for information that will facilitate interaction with the audience. Information must be easily conveyed in the form of tables, figures, and/or other visual presentations of clinical or research material.

Continuing Education Credits Arrangements will be made with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Continuing Education Board to enable ASHA-member participants to obtain Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Electronic submissions are strongly encouraged. The Request for Presentation forms and the guidelines for electronic submissions are available online at the following web address: http://www.ifacongress2003.com Proposals for presentations will also be accepted by postal mail. A printed copy of Request for Presentation form is included in the present package of information. Presentation submissions must be typed in English or in French if the contributor is unable to present in English. Dans le cas où le conférencier est dans l’impossibilité de présenter en anglais, il pourra le faire en français et pareillement il pourra faire l’abrégé et le résumé en français.

Participants who submit a proposal for presentation at the Congress are requested to send: 1. Request for Presentation from Indicate your preference for the format of the presentation. Authors should indicate whether or not they agree to have their submission scheduled for a different duration, considered for a poster session or withdrawn if their preference cannot be accommodated in the program. Indicate special equipment requirements. Late equipment requests cannot be guaranteed. 2. Abstract Abstracts should be limited to 100 words excluding the title and information about the authors. 3. Summary Summaries (500–1000 words) should clearly state the goals of the presentation. In addition, summaries related to research investigations should also include a statement of the methods and results of the study. Abstracts and summaries should be submitted: ELECTRONICALLY to [email protected] in Rich-text-format (RTF) or Microsoft Word format or in plain text. If an author has need of special symbols that are likely to display incorrectly in an electronic submission, please send an additional version of the documents in Adobe Acrobat format (PDF) with fonts embedded. Mailed submissions must include five printed copies of the Request for Presentation form, the Abstract and the Proposal Summary together with a copy of the Abstract and Summary on an IBMcompatible 3.5” diskette as an RTF, MS Word or plain text format that can be edited. The diskette label should clearly indicate the formatting style (PC or Mac) as well as the software program and version used to prepare the documents. In exceptional caes where it is impossible to comply with these conditions, we will accept submissions with only one printed copy of the Abstract and Proposal Summary.

Submission of a proposal is a commitment by the author(s) to register for the Congress and present in the time slot assigned by the Program Committee.



The first author will be notified of proposal status in December 2002.



The Program Committee will select papers on the bases of quality, type of proposal, nature of proposal, program offerings, and relevance to conference participants.



Final decisions concerning the format of the presentation will be made by the Program Committee.
