Although there have been significant changes in the relationships between the Spanish-speaking communities and Anglo-American society in Cali fornia since this study was first pub lished ten years ago, many o f the health problems still prevail. Conse quently, the book has been reissued for people working in medical and public health programs and as a rec ord of an ethnic culture that is rapid ly changing.
Inflammatory and dystrophic types of periodontal disease and other intra oral pathologic changes are held to be autodestructive processes caused by traumatizing parafunctions. These parafunctions elicit changes in the alveolar bone that are followed by changes in the gingiva. The latter may be complicated by superimposed in fections.

It is difficult to face the reality o f the impending death o f a loved one and
even to accept the finality o f death. For man, through all of his life ex periences, has never really learned to accept the inevitability o f loss, whether it is long anticipated or an unexpected tragedy. Mourning, o f course, is a normal emotional response. It is a release of those inner restraints, fears, and memories that arise when one has suf fered a loss. After a reasonable peri od, however, prolonged mourning may have other meanings— personal inadequacy or an expression o f guilt. How one prepares for the approach of death or accepts the shock o f a sudden death will depend primarily on his own inner strength. Such an experience tests a person’s capacity to accept responsibilities that he may previously have avoided or been spared. Then, too, one must recognize that in the loss o f a mate or o f a member o f his family, he is not alone. Friends and relatives, even casual acquaint ances, com e forth to assist and lend support. To assess his own attitudes, the re viewer wrote the preceding para graphs before reading Doctor Kutscher’s excellent book which is a compendium o f interrelated treatises on the many facets o f death, grief, and bereavement. After reading the book and thought fully considering its contents, the re viewer confirmed his personal belief that the bereaved must look to his own inner strengths, capacities, and resolutions to find security and com fort. The scope o f topics supports this view, leaving room for individual expression of one’s personal feelings. For many, the book will be a source o f comfort, reference, and guidance. It enables one to understand his em o tions and feelings about death and to cope with the problems that most di rectly occur at the time o f death or during the period o f mourning. The preface is the most poignant and meaningful writing in the book. However, one may criticize the book’s organization. The more sensi tive, gentle, and perceptive sections on philosophy, religion, and survival would have been more appropriate as initial chapters. And for those who
are not accustomed to the harsh real ities connected with dying and death, the stark problems o f “To Tell or N ot to Tell the Patient” may be some what disturbing. On the whole, how ever, the careful editing and the high quality o f the writing make for a clear presentation. As the author says, there is a need for such a book. It is up to the read er, o f course, to determine how well this book meets his individual need. Sidney Epstein

It is difficult to face the reality o f the impending death o f a loved one and
even to accept the finality o f death. For man, through all of his life ex periences, has never really learned to accept the inevitability o f loss, whether it is long anticipated or an unexpected tragedy. Mourning, o f course, is a normal emotional response. It is a release of those inner restraints, fears, and memories that arise when one has suf fered a loss. After a reasonable peri od, however, prolonged mourning may have other meanings— personal inadequacy or an expression o f guilt. How one prepares for the approach of death or accepts the shock o f a sudden death will depend primarily on his own inner strength. Such an experience tests a person’s capacity to accept responsibilities that he may previously have avoided or been spared. Then, too, one must recognize that in the loss o f a mate or o f a member o f his family, he is not alone. Friends and relatives, even casual acquaint ances, com e forth to assist and lend support. To assess his own attitudes, the re viewer wrote the preceding para graphs before reading Doctor Kutscher’s excellent book which is a compendium o f interrelated treatises on the many facets o f death, grief, and bereavement. After reading the book and thought fully considering its contents, the re viewer confirmed his personal belief that the bereaved must look to his own inner strengths, capacities, and resolutions to find security and com fort. The scope o f topics supports this view, leaving room for individual expression of one’s personal feelings. For many, the book will be a source o f comfort, reference, and guidance. It enables one to understand his em o tions and feelings about death and to cope with the problems that most di rectly occur at the time o f death or during the period o f mourning. The preface is the most poignant and meaningful writing in the book. However, one may criticize the book’s organization. The more sensi tive, gentle, and perceptive sections on philosophy, religion, and survival would have been more appropriate as initial chapters. And for those who
are not accustomed to the harsh real ities connected with dying and death, the stark problems o f “To Tell or N ot to Tell the Patient” may be some what disturbing. On the whole, how ever, the careful editing and the high quality o f the writing make for a clear presentation. As the author says, there is a need for such a book. It is up to the read er, o f course, to determine how well this book meets his individual need. Sidney Epstein
