*0 ra l M edicine, Diagnosis and Treatm ent *0 ra l Surgery. T ransactions o f th e T hird Inte rn a tio n al Conference Robert V. Walker, editor. 581 pages w ith illu stra tio n s. $28.75. Baltim ore, W illiam s & W ilkin s Co., 1971.

This book represents a wide variety o f oral surgery subjects presented by oral surgeons from all parts o f the world. It is a compilation o f the papers presented at the Third Inter national Conference on Oral Sur gery held in N ew York in 1968. The conference presented three main symposiums entitled: “Pathol ogy and Management o f Ameloblas tomas,” “The Open Bite Deformity,” and “Pre-Prosthetic Surgery.” In addition, many other papers were presented on various subjects. The author has combined this last group o f papers and the papers o f the sym posiums into six chapters: Surgical treatment o f mandibulofacial anom alies; pre-prosthetic surgery; oral pathology and surgical pathology; odontogenic surgery; medical con siderations in oral surgery; and re search. Many o f the articles are well written and present original theories and techniques. The wide experience o f the authors and the many tech niques presented permit the reader to compare different approaches to the clinical and pathological prob lems. The author has made no edi torial comment, hence the reader must use his own judgment in eval uating the content o f the papers. Several controversial subjects are covered and divergent points o f view are expressed. The real value o f the book is that it assembles in one volume the works o f many oral surgeons with various

Lester W. Burket. Sixth edition. 730 pages w ith 4 66 illu s trations. Index. $24. Philadelphia, J. B. Lip p in co tt, 1971.

This is the sixth edition o f a wellknown, time-tested book. The pub lisher says that this revision is the most extensive since its initial pub lication. The author gives ample recognition to his collaborators and credits the entire oral m edicine de partment o f his school for this edi tion. Emphasis is placed on the inter relationships between systemic and oral disease. Opportunities are sug gested for more cooperation be tween the dentist and physician for the improvement o f total health care. Much more emphasis is placed on diseases o f the ambulatory patient. But the excellent bibliography af fords the opportunity for in-depth study o f the problems o f the bed ridden patient. The color atlas has been deleted in this edition; this al lows expansion o f the text material related to diagnosis and treatment. The number o f sections has been reduced; this actually is logical and simplifies the approach to the con tents. The section on oral cancer has had minimal revision yet still re mains a meaningful contribution. The section on “Disorders o f the Temporomandibular Joint and Related Structures” is outstanding. This comprehensive discussion is well organized and illustrated. It includes examples o f various dis orders o f the temporomandibular joint complex with symptomatology and suggested treatment regimens. The chapter on vesicular and bul lous lesions has been expanded to

contain also ulcerative lesions. A l though the illustrations remain es sentially unchanged, there has been revision o f the text substance. The chapter on laboratory procedures reflects a major revision. The den tist and the dental student will find this part meaningful and under standable. Burket, his collaborators, and colleagues are to be congratulated. They have revised a well-known book. The revisions appear to be carefully planned and do not inter fere with the traditional approach. Indeed, the sixth edition should take its place as a reference and textbook for physicians and dentists as well as students o f both profes sions. Ingram W. Ogden

*G rant’s M ethod o f Anatomy John V. Basmajian. Eighth edition. 665 pages with illu s tra tions. Index. $15.50. Baltim ore, W illiam s & W ilkins, Co. 1971.

Systematic review o f the eighth edi tion o f Grant’s M ethods o f Anatomy reveals it to be as well organized, clearly written, and as interesting as it was some years ago when it served as m y first introduction to gross anat omy. The format is bolder than that o f the seventh edition, with slightly larger type, a redesign o f chapter headings, and bold print at the be ginning o f sections or paragraphs. Sections that were previously in small print are now more integral parts o f the narrative because o f a type size closer to that o f the regular text. The new design also permits close approximation o f illustrations and their descriptions. N ew illustra tions have been added (for example, referred pain, greater saphenous vein, role o f adductors o f thigh during hip flexion) that are helpful to the reader. The text has been shortened, but the best o f Grant’s logic and explan ations have been preserved. Although no textbook will fulfill the require ments o f various formats o f all new er currículums in gross anatomy,

much o f Grant’s eighth edition will adapt readily to a variety o f courses. For example, the systemic review at the beginning o f the textbook pre sents fundamental terminology and basic information for any student, whether he is in a systemic, regional, or multidisciplinary course o f any number o f hours. H is axioms and general principles (for example, sides o f safety and danger for nerve origins), which for years have been useful for the student o f anatomy, are even m ore useful today when students are searching for fundamen tal concepts and clinical or functional applications o f the discipline. Illus trations, both simple and detailed, are clearly labeled. Developmental considerations are used where ap propriate and are still classic in sim plicity and clarity o f expression. A s suggestions for future revisions, these points might be considered. While no harm is done to anatomic accuracy, a few instances o f tele ology arise in which a revision o f phrases would be more acceptable to the student o f function. For exam ple, in the description o f the supi nator muscles, muscle fibers do not take a direction antagonistic to the pronator muscle because that m us cle is a pronator. Rather, because the fibers o f the supinator muscle are at right angles to the pronator muscle, the supinator muscle can function in the opposite direction, that is, it can supinate the forearm. It would be helpful to have a more adequate description o f inguinal her nia (both direct and indirect) and a discussion o f femoral hernias. The student o f today (perhaps as well as o f yesterday) is more apt to study the detailed morphology o f a region if he can understand the clinical reasons for its importance. The sec tion on the perineum might be im proved by concomitant consideration o f frontal and sagittal sections corre sponding closely with views o f the perineal aspect. The author is to be congratulated on preserving the best o f Grant’s original treatment and on continu ing to update and to modernize the changes that were evident in the seventh edition. It is a pleasure to see

the truths o f the past continued in a m ore modern and appealing setting. The eighth edition o f Grant’s M ethod o f Anatomy is destined to continue as a leading text and will surely sur vive the hazards o f modern curricu lum revision. Charles E. Blevins

*Tem porary and Sem iperm anent S p lin t ing: An Atlas o f C linical Procedures Andrejs Baumhammers. 117 pages w ith 124 illu stra tio n s. Index. $9.25. S pringfield, III, CharlesC Thomas, 1971.

T o splint or not to splint is a con troversial issue, the pros and cons o f which are not discussed in this book. The author limits his presen tation to describing concisely the clinical procedures for various tem porary and semipermanent splints for use on periodontally involved m obile teeth; use o f these splints also would apply to teeth loosened by traumatic injuries. The book is written for the general practitioner and the student preparing for gen eral practice. The author has selected those techniques that are tried and practical and that have stood the test o f time in his experience. In the introduction, splints are classified into extracoronal splints and intracoronal splints; the steps in periodontal therapy that should accompany the use o f splints are listed. The next 57 pages describe these extracoronal splints: plastic reinforced wire splints, bar-wireplastic splints, plastic occlusal splints, prosthetic gingival stents, continu ous cast clasp splints, swing-lock removable partial prostheses, and orthodontic band splints. The next 34 pages describe these types o f intracoronal splints: A-splints, amalgam splints, and provisional periodontal prostheses. A final chap ter o f IV2 pages deals with manage ment o f temporary and semiper manent splinting. Each splinting technique is simply described in a step-by-step procedure, and is well illustrated with drawings and photo graphs. A selected bibliography is

given at the end o f each chapter for further reference should the reader require it. The publisher’s attention should be drawn to some production er rors. On page 36, Hawley is incor rectly spelled. In section four on page 61, the laboratory prescription calls for the first molar to be banded. This tooth was extracted in this case and the prescription should refer to banding the second molar. On page 45, figure 5-11 shows an ex posed crown margin on the right maxillary central incisor, but the caption refers to the left central in cisor. The author meets the objectives that he defines and the book should meet a need o f the practitioner seeking step-by-step instructions in temporary and semitemporary splinting techniques.
