Award of the G. Whitaker International Burns Prize for 2003 Palermo, Italy
At a meeting held on 22 March 2003, at the seat of the G. Whitaker Foundation, Palermo, after examining the scientific activity in the fields of research, teaching, clinical organization, prevention and cooperation presented by various candidates and in consideration of the high level of the candidates, the adjudicating committee unanimously decided to award the prize for 2003 to Professor Stuart P. Pegg (Australia), Director of the Burns Centre for adults of the Royal Brisbane Hospital Burns Centre in Australia. The prize is awarded with the following motivation: Professor Stuart Pegg, from the outset of his medical career, has performed his professional activity in the sector of burns. In 1977, he became Chief of the Royal Brisbane Hospital Burns Centre in Australia and in 1980 also of the Royal Children’s Hospital Burns Centre. In 2001, he left his position as Chief of the Paediatric Burns Centre, which has now been named the “Stuart Pegg Burn Centre” in recognition of the distinguished nature of his activity. Today, he continues to be Chief of the Burns Centre for adults. Professor Pegg’s merit lies above all in his determination and capacity to organize assistance to burn patients in the vast and difficult territory of northeast Australia. Thanks to his efforts, it has been possible to centralize assistance in

two centres in Brisbane Hospital and to organize the rapid transfer of all patients coming from Queensland, New South Wales, the Northern Territories, Papua New Guinea, and the Pacific Islands. This type of assistance has contributed considerably to the improvement of the patients’ prognosis, treatment, and rehabilitation and made the two centres the leading specialized departments in all Australia. In the year 2000, the Queensland Skin Bank was inaugurated in the hospital, and in its laboratory it now produces autologous skin covering components for its patients. Professor Pegg’s activity as a physician and organizer is flanked by his university teaching in the burns sector, and also contributed to the creation of the Australian Burns Society. He has published numerous papers of the highest level in the leading national and international journals and received numerous awards from national and international scientific organisms, some of which have named him an honorary member. His pioneering spirit in the field of burns, dedicated to his country, was recognized in 1996 in his appointment as Professor Emeritus of Brisbane University and the award of the “Order of Australia”.
