Announcement Recent progress in the area of Lipids and Lipid Metabolism has given rise to an increasing awareness of the significant role played by lipids and lipid-derived metabolic products in biological processes, including transmembrane and intracellular signalling and the communication between cells and tissues. Recognizing these developments, BBA is pleased to announce the introduction of a special subsection of Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, entitled Lipids in Signalling and Recognition. Serving the interests of the many researchers in this field, the subsection will gather together articles concentrating on all biochemical and biophysical aspects of lipids and lipid-derived messenger molecules. These include their structure, physicochemical properties and transport, as well as the regulation and enzymology of their biosynthesis and metabolic inactivation and the recognition processes underlying their biological activities. Researchers are hereby invited to submit relevant manuscripts.

Rapid Reports Authors are asked to note the following points when submitting Rapid Reports. o A Rapid Report should be a complete piece of work of special significance and timeliness. o It should be concise and not normally exceed four printed pages (i.e., 12 pages of double-spaced typescript, including tables and figures up to a total of four). Since a Rapid Report is short, division into sections (e.g., Introduction, Materials and methods, etc.) is inappropriate. An Abstract of about 50 words is, however, required. o A Rapid Report should be submitted to one of the Executive Editors as mentioned on the inside cover of each BBA issue, along with a covering letter which gives a brief synopsis of the key findings of the study that would justify publication as a Rapid Report, and includes some sense of their significance.

o The Executive Editor will decide on the acceptability of the paper for publication, generally within 2 weeks of receipt of the manuscript. o No proofs will be sent unless specifically requested. In such a case, a fax number must be provided to enable turnaround of corrected proofs within 48 hours. o Rapid Reports are added to the end of issues currently in production. o An accepted Rapid Report will generally be published within 6 - 8 weeks of receipt at the Publisher's office, depending on issue scheduling.

Old-style BBA Reports are no longer being considered for publication.
