The first meeting of the session was held at the Council House, Birmingham, on October 5th, 1922, at 3.3 ° p.m. Twenty-four members were in attendance. The induction of Dr. H. Gibbons W a r d as President for the session 1922-23 was performed by Dr. Snell, the retiring President. Apologies for absence were read from Drs. Cyriax, Edwards, Ridley Bailey, Cowie, Burton, and Petgrave Johnson. T he minutes of the previous meeting were taken as read. A letter was read from Dr. A. Bostock Hill, thanking the Branch for electing him as Hon. Vice-President. Correspondence which had passed between the Hon. Secretary and a member of the branch with reference to the vacant appointment of Medical Officer of Heattb to the Nuneaton Rural District was read to the Branch, and the Hon. Secretary's reply was approved. The President then delivered his presidential address, "Prospects of the Municipal Medical Officer." After reviewing in detail the positions of Medical Officers in every Branch of the Public Health Service, Dr. Gibbons W a r d came to the conclusion that the outlook for those holding junior posts could not be deemed a very hopeful one. The higher appointments obtainable in the School Medical Branch, the V.D. Branch, and the Tuberculosis Branch, for which they might qualify, were few and most of them did not constitute a goal for an ambitious man. The speaker then discussed the prospects that a whole time Medical Officer of Health had of obtaining a reasonable income, which he defined as one which was sufficient to educate a family, and to m a k e provision for retirement at a suitable age. In his opinion there were very few posts at the present time which came up to this standard. Having referred to recent legislation on superannuation and security of tenure, Dr. W a r d outlined the advantages of a Medics! Officer in the Public Health Service, and concluded his remarks on a note of optimism as to the future.

The President having proposed the health of the King, it fell to Dean Inge, owing to the change of Government, to give the toast of " The Society." After Dr. Eustace Hill had made a happy response, the Ex-President (Dr. Howarth) proposed " The Guests," Sir Herbert Nield, Sir Humphry Rolleston and Sir Anthony Bowlby replying. The health of the President, proposed by Dr. Sidney Barwise, was the last toast of the
