A N N U A L GENERAL MEETING T h e A n n u a l General M e e t i n g of t h e Society was held in the C o m m i t t e e R o o m , T a v i s t o c k H o u s e South, Tavistock Square, L o n d o n , W.C.1, on T h u r s d a y , D e c e m b e r 10th, 1953, at 5.30 p.m. T h e P r e s i d e n t (Dr. C. Metcalfe Brown) took the chair, a n d there were also p r e s e n t nine Fellows of t h e Society. Minutes. T h e M i n u t e s of t h e A n n u a l General M e e t i n g held on D e c e m b e r 1 lth, 1952, were confirmed a n d signed by the President. Annual Reports and Accounts. T h e A n n u a l Reports of the Council, of the T r e a s u r e r , and of t h e Editor of PUBLIC HEAL'rrI for the Session 1952/5"{, were received a n d adopted together with the Balance Sheet as at S e p t e m b e r 30th, 1953, and the I n c o m e and E x p e n d i t u r e A c c o u n t for the year ended S e p t e m b e r 30th, 1953. Size of the Council. Reference was m a d e to the decision taken at the last A n n u a l General M e e t i n g t h a t t h e size of the Council

~5 was too large a n d that tile Council should discuss ways and m e a n s by w h i c h the size could bc reduced. It was reported that ~, r e c o m m e n d a t i o n would be before the Council at its n e x t meeting. Appointment of Auditors. Messrs. Greene, C l e m e n t s & Co., Chartered Accountants, of 20, Bloomsbtrry Square, L o n d o n , W . C . I , were re-appointed t h e Auditors of t h e Society. Dr. James Fenton. Dr. C. IIerington, the Hon. T r e a s u r e r , drew the attention of the m e e t i n g to his report in ~ h i c h he paid tribute to his predecessor in office, D r . James Fenton. A hearty vote of thanks to Dr. J a m e s F e n t o n for his past services to the Society was proposed, seconded and u n a n i m o u s l y carried. Election. Installation of New President.--After paying" tribute to the help he h a d received d u r i n g his year of office, t h e retiring P r e s i d e n t formally asked D r . W. G. Patterson to take over the chair. Dr. Patterson replied suitabl3;. Durham Hospital Management Committee.--Dr. R. G. D r u m m o n d was n o m i n a t e d as the B r a n c h ' s representative on the Medical Advisory C o m m i t t e e of the D u r h a m Hospital M a n a g e ment Committee. Polion,yelitis.--A small s u b - c o m m i t t e e consisting of D r s . G r a n t , Browell, D a w s o n - W a l k e r , Elder a n d Leitch was appointed to consider papers from t h e M i n i s t r y of Health on the E p i d e m i o l o g y of Poliomyelitis~ Annual Report of CounciL--The A n n u a l Report of the Council for 1952-1953 was s u b m i t t e d together with t h e Financial Statem e n t , w h i c h s h o w e d a credit balance of s 18s. 5d. T h e Report pointed o u t that once again expenditure exceeded i n c o m e and that as G r a n t from the Society had n o t kept pace with t h e increased costs of postage, stationery, etc., f u r t h e r deficits could be expected in future years. Election of CounciL--The B r a n c h approved the following , e c o m m e n d a t i o n s of Council : - (1) T h a t the pj~esent m e t h o d of election by ballot at the A n n u a l M e e t i n g continue. (2) T h a t the n u m b e r so elected be reduced from 12 to 10. (3) T h a t s u c h S u b - G r o u p s as the Branch m a y decide shall be directly represented on the Council. T h e following were elected to the Council ; Drs. Hebblethwaite, Grant, Tilley, Hopper, Walker, D a w s o n - W a l k e r , Pierce, BrowelI, Dewell, and Wilson.
