OESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE RECEPTORS AND NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION ANTIGENS IN PULMONARY LYMPHANGIOLEIOMYOMATOSIS.
St.Vincent's Hospital and the University of Melbourne Pulmonary lymphangleiomyomatosis is a rare disorder, seen exclusively in females during the reproductive years and is characterised by proliferation of smooth muscle in the lung. It progresses to pulmonary failure and death, unless abated by menopause. Hormonal manipulation has been variably successful in altering the progress of the disease. Hormone receptors have been shown in cytosolic preparations of pulmonary tissue and immunocytochernicaily in frozen sections of individual case reports of the disease. Using routinely fixed paraffin embedded archival tissue, we have been able to demonstrate marked variation in oestrogen and progesterone receptor status in a series of eight cases. These findings may partly explain the inconsistent resubs of hormonal manipulation in the treatment of the disease. Presenter: 0.Machet. Anatomical Pathology, St. Vincent's Hospital, FITZROY.
