Antibiotics and Antiviral Compounds Antibiotics and Antiviral Compounds, Chemical Synthesis and Modification. K. Krohn, H.A. Kirst and H. Maag (Eds.). VCH Weinheim, New York, Basel, Cambridge, Tokyo, 1993.
This book represents a collection of reviews on antibiotics chemistry, analytics and mode of action, written by leading scientists in the corresponding fields. All important classes of antibiotics are dealt with. In addition, the chemistry of some special antiviral compounds is included. The authors as well as the editors come from industry and from academia, thus reflecting the joint efforts that are needed in the more and more demanding research of antibiotic therapeutics. The book begins with a special chapter on new methodologies applied to antibioti~ synthesis. Five chapters follow, each dedicated to a structural class as

macrolides, /3-1actames, peptides and glycopeptides, endiynes and carbohydrates. The closing chapter tells us something about new antivirals. I found all the papers very well referenced and scientifically up-todate. Graphics and printing are of good quality, which is especially important for the sometimes rather complicated reaction schemes. Due to the editors' merits, the style looks very homogeneous. In summary, researchers in the disciplines of organic chemistry, biochemistry and especially medicinal chemistry will find this book very useful for their work.
