AORN Journal Author Guidelines
T
he AORN Journal welcomes manuscripts pertaining to nurses practicing in the operating room. Contributions are invited from professional nurses engaged in O R nursing, education, and management, from physicians and other health care professionals, and from academicians. Letters to the editor addressing an article previously published in the Journal or opinions concerning current O R nursing issues are encouraged. Readers also are encouraged to submit ideas that may be developed into articles and names of potential authors. Editorial policy. Prospective authors are encouraged to write query letters to the editor. Send manuscripts or queries to the Editor, AORN Journal, 10170 E Mississippi Ave, Denver, CO 8023 1. Manuscripts may not have been previously published or submitted simultaneously to any other publication. Upon publication, the author transfers all copyright ownership to the Association of Operating Room Nurses, Inc. Published manuscripts become the property of the AORN Journal and may not be reproduced without the permission of the editor. Views and statements are the sole responsibility of the author. Submitting the article. Submit three copies of the manuscript. Articles must be typed using double spacing and 1-inch margins on 8% x 11 paper. A cover letter that includes the home and business addresses and telephone numbers of the author(s) must be sent with the manuscript. If the manuscript has more than one author, designate a senior author for correspondence. Rejected manuscripts will be returned. Manuscripts submitted by RNs will be considered for the Journal home study program. T o be selected, manuscripts must be comprehensive papers written on clinical or management topics (manuscripts with teaching and/or nursing care plans also will be considered), and must be at least 18 pages in length; however, two shorter articles can be submitted together.
Authors are not required to write the home study examination. Peer review. Manuscripts are reviewed by two members of the A O R N Editorial Board. Manuscripts are judged on accuracy, content, organization, style, contribution to nursing literature, originality, and appearance. The Editorial Board makes recommendations to the editor to accept, reject, or request revisions. Authors can expect to be notified of the Board’s decision six to eight weeks after submitting the manuscript. Accepted manuscripts are then edited by the editorial staff. Before publication, the author(s) will receive an edited typescript for final approval. Format. Manuscripts should be 10 to 20 pages long, depending on the topic. The manuscript should have a main title and a subtitle, with subheads to indicate subdivisions in the text. When first used, abbreviations and acronyms should be spelled out, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Use generic names for medications and devices rather than commercial names. Give weights, measurements, and medication dosages in metric units. Note temperatures in Fahrenheit and Celsius. Illustrations. Photographs and line drawings are encouraged. Color slides are best, followed by color prints and black-and-white prints; negatives cannot be used. Illustrations must be labeled on the back with a crayon or on an attached sheet of paper. Indicate number, top, and name of author. Do not use paper clips or write heavily on photographs. Tables and figures should be clearly labeled and called out in the text. They must be referenced if not the work of the author. Captions must be submitted with all photographs and drawings. The author is responsible for obtaining permission to publish illustrations from a previously published work and sending a copy of the permission t o the Journal. All 891

photographs will be returned. Columns. The AORN Journal welcomes manuscripts on ethics, practical innovations, elder care, and those that express a professional opinion. Column lengths vary, but the average is five to eight typewritten pages. Notes. Quotations, original ideas, or interpretations of works of other authors must be documented. Number the notes consecutively in the text and provide the complete reference at the end of the article. Authors also may submit suggested readings of publications pertinent to the article but not directly cited. Notes and suggested readings must have names of all authors, title of article, name of publication, volume number, publisher and city of publication (for books), publication date (month and year for articles), and page number(s) cited. When more
than one source is cited for a statement, combine the sources into one note. For specific questions, refer to Kate L.
