Aortojejunal fistula Garyfalia Ampanozi, Katharina Schumann, Michael J. Thali, Dominic Gascho Department of Forensic Medicine and Imaging, Institute of Forensic Medicine, Winterthurerstr. 190/52, 8057 Zurich, Switzerland
Postmortem computed tomography angiography (PMCTA) revealed leakage of the contrast medium from the descending aorta to the jejunum (arrow in Fig. 1a), below the level of anastomosis. Histology revealed an ulceration of the jejunum at the site of the fistula. Cause of death was determined as internal
and external bleeding. Three dimensional reconstruction of the PMCTA depicts the presence of the contrast medium in the aorta (pale red in Fig. 1b), but also in the esophagus and proximal jejunum (orange in Fig. 1b) and the trachea (light blue in Fig. 1b). The fistula is colored pink (encircled).
Fig. 1. The decedent had been operated previously due to a carcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction and a gastrectomy with subsequent esophagojejunostomy was performed. He died in the hospital.
