FOCUS APIC’s near-infrared absorbing pigments APIC Corp (part of the Mitsubishi group) is commercialising a range of near-infrared absorbing pigments, suitable for use in optical filters used in plasma display panels. The technology and patent rights for the manufacture of these pigments were transferred from Mitsubishi Chemical in 2Q 2006. Japan Chemical Week, 21 Sep 2006, 47 (2384), 3

Arkema launches Orgasol Soft Focus ant-ageing pigments Arkema was created in May 2006, inheriting the chemical businesses spun off by Elf Atofina and other parts of the Total oil/gas group. Arkema has recently extended its range of pigments for the cosmetics industry with the introduction of Orgasol Soft Focus. These pigments feature very small polyamide particles which can settle into skin wrinkles and function as microreflectors, thereby lightening shadowy areas. The polyamide particles are produced by polymerising caprolactam or lauryl amide with botanical or synthetic additives, using proprietary technology. They have a different morphology from conventional powders. Parfums, Cosmetiques, Actualités, Jun/Jul 2006, (189), 64 (in French)

BASF’s Lumogen black pigments BASF has introduced two new pigments Lumogen Black FK-4280 and Lumogen Black FK-4281 which are designed to reduce the heat buildup in black or dark coloured construction elements. It is claimed that solar heat build-up can be cut by 50%, compared against conventional black pigments. However, the Lumogen pigments are about 50 times more expensive than alternatives based on carbon black. In addition, Lumogen black pigments offer excellent heat resistance, colour strength and migration stability, as well as extreme resistance to chemical and physical effects, good dispersibility and insolubility in all common solvents. Borealis launches flame retardant for power cable jackets Borealis A/S has launched Casico FR6082, a halogen-free flame retardant compound, suitable for jacketing power cables. Casico FR6082 also protects against ultraviolet radiation and it is lighter than conventional substitutes, reflecting the relatively low amounts of fillers used. Processing properties are satisfactory in extruders designed for either polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene. With Casico FR 6082, cable jackets can be made stronger and tougher, ideal for use in overhead and underground power cable applications. High Performance Plastics, Jul 2006, 4

Croda’s dispersing agent facilitates high dosages of TiO2 & zinc oxide The new dispersing agent – Crodasperse from Croda International – helps to provide superior sunscreen protection, with minimal whitening, by facilitating very high dosages of TiO2 and zinc oxide. Crodasperse can be used in colour cosmetics, as well as in conventional sunblocks. Parfums, Cosmetiques, Actualités, Jun/Jul 2006, (189), 64 (in French)

DIC’s azo red lake pigment for plastics Dainippon Ink & Chemicals (DIC) has introduced Watchung Red, an azo lake pigment designed for use in colouring plastics. Watchung Red is highly dispersible, while maintaining its average primary particle size. It has excellent thermal stability, giving less colour-shade variation than alternatives. It also enhances the plastic compounder’s productivity because it gives rise to less clogging of the filters. DIC believes the global market potential for Watchung Red to be of the order of 4000-5000 tonnes/y. Japan Chemical Week, 21 Sep 2006, 47 (2384), 2

Eckart’s pearlescents for cosmetics Eckart has launched the Prestige Soft Earthtones range of pearlescent pigments, mainly for cosmetics applications. They are available in beige, bronze and fire red. Because of the relatively small particle size, these pigments impart a soft feel and natural gloss to the cosmetic products in which they are used. Parfums, Cosmetiques, Actualités, Jun/Jul 2006, (189), 64 (in French)

Engelhard extends Rightfit and Synergy colour range Engelhard, now a BASF subsidiary, has launched three new yellow and scarlet pigments under the Rightfit organic pigment and the Synergy colour ranges. These pigments are designed for plastics applications and they feature improved colour strength and thermal stability.

Daio Paper has developed a technology for recovering a substantial proportion of the white mineral pigment content from waste paper sludge. The pigment content consists of a mixture of calcium carbonate and kaolin. This can be dried and then used again in the manufacture of paper. Daio Paper recently launched the world’s first office printer/copier paper that can be described as “100% recycled” – made from recycled white mineral pigment as well as recycled fibre.
