Camkometer. Considers the stress path methods of lab testing amd describes the automatic programmable triaxial test in which a predetermined stress path can be used. Finally, briefly describes the sa~d isle technique for marina structures. 792013 INFLUENCE OF PORE PRESSURE ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF KAYE~TA SABDSTONE Dropek~ R K; Jmhmson~ J N; Walsh~ J B J Geophye Res~ V83, NB6~ i0 June 19~8~ P28172824 New experimental t e c h n i q u e s a r e presented for the measurement of pore pressure as an additional depenient variable tu~er umdrained triaxial test conditions. Experimental data are presented for the variation of Ix~e pressure in K~yenta samdstone at various de, tees of water saturation. The following were foumd to be in (1)~0dth a g r e e m e n t w i t h thscretical predictions: e rate of increase of pore pressure with external l y applied pressure, (2) the c ~ e s s i b i l i t y of fully saturated samples~ a ~ (3) t h e volume

strains at which pore pressure begins to build up. The effective stress law is found to hold for the ahear failure of fluid-filled rock. 792014 APPLICATION OF AN EXPERIMENTALLY BASED NONLINEAR CONSTITUTIVE M~)EL OF SOILS IN A B O R TORY AND FIELD TESTS Richards~ B G Aust Geo~ech J, V~8, 1978, P20-30 The Modified Variable Moduli Model has been found to be a simple and convenient method for predicting the behaviour of two ~on-c~heslve soils ar~ an unsaturated e~pan~ive clay in practical applications. Whereas the parameters for the non-cohesive materials can be expressed as functions of the effective octahedral normal and the maximum shear stresses, the parameters far the expansive clay are shown to be independent of the total octahedral normal stress and can be expressed in terms of soil suction and the maxim~n shear stress. Also a combination of triaxlal tests with isotropic pressure and with constant octahedral normal stress can provide all the necessary data without volume change measurements.

Regression analysis techniques were tried in an attempt to relate kerogen yield or apparent specific gravity to the parameters c ~ l ~ s e l v e streDgth, Young's modulue~ add Poisson's ratio. Correlation coefficients were very poor s imdics~img that this type of aralysis was not amenable to these data. Results are presented for analyses of variance techniques showirg relstionships between some of these parameters and specified percentages of dawsonite add nshcolite. Average physical properties for design purposes were also determined for the horizons of interest. Creep data obtained from nahcolite- and dawsonite-rich oil shales provides a best fit to a modified power equation. After regression, factor, component, cluster, and discriminant analyses a r e discussed, these techniques are applied to the Crescent mine data. Three appendixes contain s~ne of the required mathematical ~ statistical detail plus heuristic examples of three multivariate techniques- component, cluster, and discriminant analysis.
