Kamel, H A and McCabe, M W 83.4 'Applications of GIFTS III to structural engineering problems' Comput. Struct. Vol 7 No 3 (June 1977) pp 399-41:5 This paper describes the latest version of the GIFTS system (Graphics Oriented Interactive Finite-Element Package for TimeSharing). The system capabilities are described and several design-oriented examples are given. These examples include the analysis of a three-dimensional framework, vibrational mode computation of an aircraft wing and the analysis, using substructures, of a bulkore carrier. Koutitas, C G 83.5 'Finite element approach to waves due to landslides' J. I-/ydraul. Div. ASGE Vol 103 No HY9 Proc. Paper 13218 (September 1977) pp 1021-1029 In this paper, the finite-element method is used for describing the generation and unidirectional propagation of waves in a channel due to lateral earth motion caused by landslides on the channel bank. The method of weighted residuals is used in the element formulation and the resulting system of algebraic equations is solved by an interative scheme. An efficient and short computer program for multistorey building design is described. The program consists of three basic parts: preliminary analysis using approximate methods, determination of member sizes, and matrix analysis of the frame to determine actual response. A redesign capability is included in the event the preliminary member sizes are not adequate. The program may be obtained from the authors. Monasa, F E 83.7 'Numerical procedure for the deflections of buckled ela~to-plastic flexible bars' Comput. Struct. ~/ol 7 No 3 (June 1977) pp 453-460 A numerical procedure to determine the deflections at the free end and along the central line of buckled elasto-plastic flexible bars is presented. The first-order nonlinear differential equations are numerically integrated using the improved Euler method. A FORTRAN listing of the computer code is included. Rabbat, B G 83.8 'The computer aided design of structural concrete sections subjected to combined loading' Comput. Struct. Vol 7 No 2 (April 1977) pp 229-236 This paper describes a computer subroutine that may be employed to design the reinforcing steel of reinforced and prestressed concrete sections. The subroutine is based on a space-truss model that is capable of

predicting the post-cracking behaviour of rectangular sections subjected to combined loading. A FORTRAN listing of the subroutine is included. Rand, L M and Wang, R L 83.9 'Application of virtual memory techniques to minicomputers' A$CE Fall Convention dnd Exhibit San Francisco, California Reprint No 2976 (17-21 October 1977) A series of techniques for the implementation of virtual memory concepts within the body of an application program are presented. These techniques effectively make available to a small minicomputer system user many of the advantages of a significantly larger system without the need for a virtual operating system. An application of these techniques to a finite-element analysis system is described. Reese, L C 84.0 'Laterally loaded piles: program documentation'J. Geotech. Engng Div. ASCE Vol 103 No GT4 Proc. Paper 12862 (April 1977) pp 287-305 The documentation is presented for the :omputer program COM622 which solves the deflection and bending moment of a pile under lateral loading as a function of depth. This is the first program documented and distributed under the standards developed for the Geotechnical Engineering Division.
