Sanchez, Fuzzy Relation Equations and Their Applications to Knowledge Engineering, Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, 1989. 278 pp., Dfl. 150, US $79, UK &49. ISBN 0-7923-0307-S. Introduced by a Foreword by L.A. Zadeh this book has a dual purpose. First it presents an authorative and current account of the theory in a rigorous fashion and second, applications are described concentrated in the realm of knowledge based systems. The first part addresses the major issues which include such items as fuzzy relational equations in residuated lattices, the lower solutions of max-min equations. the measures of fuzziness of solutions, etc. In a transition to applications the authors consider the approximate solution of fuzzy relational equations. The second part deals with applications to knowledge based systems, the analysis development and application

and design of fuzzy logic controllers of fuzzy mathematics.

vol. 1354,

This volume contains the proceedings of an international congress held in La Habana in January 1987. There are six invited lectures by Z. Ciesielski, W. Dahmen et al., A.A. Goncar et al., J. Guddat et al., D. Hinrichsen et al. and E.B. Saff. The contributed papers deal with major aspects of approximation theory such as Padt approximants, uniform approximation, rational approximation and orthogonal polynomials. A section with papers on optimization is also contained in the book with papers on linear programming, optimal control and parameter estimation. (CB)
