Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance in Behavioral Health Care Reaffirmed The Dietetics in Developmental and Psychiatric Disorders (currently the Behavioral Health Nutrition) Dietetic Practice Group (DPG) and American Dietetic Association (currently the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance for Registered Dietitians (Generalist, Specialty, Advanced) in Behavioral Health Care, originally published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association in April 2006, have been reaffirmed at this time and their review date has been extended until April 2016. The Behavioral Health Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group (DPG) will be utilizing the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ revised 2012 Standards of Practice (SOP) and Standards of Professional Performance (SOPP) for Registered Dietitians or Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. Latest ACEND Accreditation Decisions Published Online The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics is the Academy’s accrediting agency for education programs preparing students for careers as Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and Dietetic Technicians, Registered. ACEND establishes and enforces accreditation standards that ensure the quality and continued improvement of nutrition and dietetics education programs. The accreditation decisions made at the most recent ACEND meeting are available at http://www.eatright.org/ACEND/ content.aspx?id¼7829 and include status of programs which have received candidacy for accreditation, full accreditation, probationary accreditation and withdrawal from accreditation.

E-Learning Module on Vitamin D The alarming increase in vitamin D insufficiency in the United States has ironically coincided with an increasing recognition that vitamin D likely has a broader contribution to the protection of health and prevention of disease than previously appreciated. This interactive self-study session will put into perspective the rapid decline in vitamin D status in the United States; the implications of vitamin D insufficiency on skeletal, inflammatory, and metabolic health among the population; and practical guidelines for how to get vitamin D from diet, sun exposure, and supplements. ABOUT PEOPLE Obituaries Honorary Member John A. Milner Dies
John A. Milner, PhD, who was named an honorary member of the Academy in 2007, died on December 31, 2013. Milner was an internationally respected scientist known for his understanding of human nutrition and its role in cancer prevention.

FROM THE ACADEMY Milner earned a bachelor of science degree in Animal Sciences from Oklahoma State University and a doctorate in Nutrition from Cornell University. During his career he served as director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences and assistant director of the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Illinois; professor of Nutrition at Pennsylvania State University; chief of the Nutritional Science Research Group, Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute; and most recently as director of the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Research Service. In addition to being an honorary member of the Academy, Milner belonged to several other professional organizations, including the American Society for Nutrition (for which he served as president in 1995), the American Chemical Society’s Food and Chemistry Division, the Institute of Food Technologists (of which he was named a fellow in 2009), the International Society of Nutrigenetics/Nutrigenomics (where he was a member of the board), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (of which he was a fellow). As a leader in his field, Milner published more than 250 book chapters, monographs, and journal articles, and served on the editorial boards for several journals, including his most recent role as senior editor for the Journal of Cancer Prevention Research. He served as a member of USDA’s Humand Nutrition Board of Scientific Counselors, the Joint USDA/Department of Health and Human Services Dietary Guidelines Committee, and most recently as incoming chair of the Intercontinental Life Sciences Institute Global Board of Trustees. He also served as a member of committees of the Institute of Medicine, the US Olympic Committee Dietary Guidelines Task Force, and as chair of the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research Working Group on Cancer Research Mechanisms. In 2008, he received the David A. Kritchevsky Career Achievement Award in Nutrition from the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), and was recently named the recipient of the Conrad Elvehjem Award for Public Service in Nutrition from ASN for 2013.

Milner will be remembered by the Academy for his national and international leadership in helping to establish future research priorities in nutrition, including promoting the Academy’s mission, vision, and values of ensuring that the dietetics profession is science based. Martha Snavely, RD, June 2013, was a member of the Academy for more than 70 years. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Auburn University and completed a dietetic internship at Vanderbilt University. She then served as a US Army dietitian in the European Theater during World War II. Snavely later went on to work for the American Heart Association, serving on their board of directors beginning in 1965. She was also active with the Academy, the American Cancer Society, the Kidney Foundation, and other health-related groups. A generous bequest from Martha Snavely’s estate will be used to establish a named fund in her memory, which will support public education activities of the Academy Foundation, such as Kids Eat Right. Glenda L. Reardon, RD, CDN, January 2014, was a member of the Academy since 1976. She graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta and went on to spend the majority of her career at the Niagara County Office for the Aging. Reardon was also an active member of the New York State Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs, New York Aging Services Dietitians, Meals on Wheels of America, and the Western New York Dietetic Association, for which she served as president.
ERRATUM In the “Position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Dietary Fatty Acids for Healthy Adults,” which appeared in the January 2014 issue of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (pp 136-153), there was an error in Table 1 on page 139. Percentages of individual fatty acids and fatty acid groups in coconut oil is in error.
