Environmental Impact Assessment
New Publications on International Regulations
The Fourth International Seminar on Environmental Impact Assessment sponsored by the World Health Organization is to be held at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, from 17 to 29 July. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has recently published 'Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Oil' which contains the articles and Annex 1 of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as modified by the 1978 Protocol and also the proposed amendments to Annex 1 agreed by IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee. In an IMO briefing announcing the new publication, the Treaty, which will become international law on 2 October this year, is described as "the most important anti-pollution measure ever adopted". Two new sections of IMO's Manual on Oil Pollution have been released recently, covering prevention and salvage. A fourth p u b l i c a t i o n - I M O / U N E P Guidelines on Oil Spill Dispersant Application and Environmental Considerations- is also now available. Marine Pollution Chemistry A Diploma course in Marine Pollution Chemistry will be held in the Department of Oceanography, Liverpool University, from January to June 1984. It is designed to give scientists with some existing chemical background, training in marine chemistry, marine pollution chemistry and chemical analysis of marine systems. A limited number of NERC Advance course studentships are available for suitable British candidates. Further information from the organizer: Dr M. R. Aquatic Toxicity The Tenth Annual Aquatic Toxicity Workshop will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on 7-10 November 1983, and the deadline for the submission of papers is 1 July.
