AREVA qualifies new hydrodynamic seal

n France, AREVA JSPM, a subsidiary of the AREVA Group that specialises in nuclear reactor pumps and devices, reports that it has successfully qualified a new hydrodynamic shaft seal system (HD seal) that can withstand station black-out (SBO) conditions for an unrivalled period of 120 hours. While new Safety Authority requirements recommend a minimum coping time of 72 hours, the tests performed by the company – under severe SBO conditions (a high water temperature of 310°C and high pressure of 175 bar (17.5 MPa)) – confirmed that the new HD seal is capable of maintaining the integrity of the primary circuit for 120 hours, which considerably increases current plant safety margins. The seal’s design includes triple redundancy, which improves reliability and stability. In addition it has an extended service life of a minimum of 10 years. This means that it can run for longer periods before it needs to be inspected. It also requires minimal maintenance, which optimises plant availability. As a key element of the reactor coolant pump (RCP), which circulates the primary coolant between the core and the steam generator, the shaft seal system ensures that the primary circuit is leak-tight. Therefore, it is essential to maintain the system’s performance even under extreme conditions such as an extended SBO, in order to protect the reactor core and preserve the plant’s safety and integrity. ‘The SBO qualification of our new HD seal for 120 hours represents a major industry step forward for enhanced plant safety,’ commented Thierry Schietecatte, Chief Executive Officer, AREVA JSPM. ‘It is the result of years of R&D combined with AREVA JSPM’s 40 years of maintenance experience on more than 400 RCPs worldwide, and close collaboration with utilities.’ Part of AREVA’s Safety Alliance programme – developed to help utilities demonstrate and upgrade the safety of their nuclear plant fleets – the new HD seal system has been designed to be installed in existing RCPs as a replacement for current hydrostatic seals, as well as in thirdgeneration RCPs for new nuclear power plants. Low-friction engine seal joins SKF’s BeyondZero portfolio

KF’s low-friction engine seal has become part of its BeyondZero portfolio that aims to help customers reduce the impact they have on the environment. The seal has a low friction elastomer lip design which is based on the wafer technology used for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) shaft seals. However, it uses a specially formulated FKM material that is engineered to have improved compression set and relaxation properties – resulting in better performance without the added cost of a mechanical spring. This creates a seal design that provides very low friction and outstanding sealing security, and has a long service life, says the firm. According to SKF, the seal reduces friction levels by up to 55%, compared with conventional seals, which provides carbon dioxide savings of over 1 g/km. Based on an annual mileage of 14 500 km it says this equates to a reduction of 14.5 kg of carbon dioxide per year. Equipping one million cars with the firm’s technology would result in a reduction in carbon dioxide of 14 500 tonnes of per year. These results are applicable to the four seals used in a four-cylinder gasoline-engine mid-size passenger car. ‘SKF has a strong focus on sustainability and it low-friction seal addresses the automotive industry’s need to reduce fuel consumption and emissions,’ said William Schaid, Vice President Global Technology, SKF Automotive Sealing Solutions. Now in full production, the seal is available for all rotating shafts, primarily in engines, but also in transmissions. Special custom designs are also available. For example, some include a plastic bayonet fitting, while others can be used in the firm’s Rotostat sealing modules. SKF launched its BeyondZero portfolio in May 2012. The environmental improvements provided by technology and products within this portfolio are validated through a life cycle assessment methodology developed by the company’s sustainability engineers. Results will be reviewed yearly by KPMG.
