F O C U S Acquisition helps metal coating specialist move into plastics Crown Group has acquired plastic painting and decorating company Electra-Finish Inc in an effort to expand into plastics. Terms of the transaction were undisclosed. Crown Group, which has seven facilities in Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Iowa, has processes in spray coating, powder coating, cleaning, and decorating for the metal industries. Arkema inaugurates its first research & development center in China Thierry Le Henaff, Arkema’s Chairman and CEO, inaugurated Arkema’s first R&D Center in China on Thursday 17 Oct 2013 on the Changshu industrial site in the presence of the Chinese authorities. At the cutting edge of technology, this new center will provide development capacities as well as ideal local support for the Group’s customers in China and South-East Asia. Alongside the Group’s KTC (Kyoto Technical Center) in Japan, it bolsters Arkema’s growth ambition in Asia, with the Group looking forward to achieving almost 30% of its sales in fast growing regions by 2016. Ideally located 80 kilometers to the North-West of Shanghai, the Changshu platform, Arkema’s largest industrial site in the world, now hosts an R&D Center in close proximity to its customers in this, a strategic region for the Group. The Changshu Research and Development Center (CRDC) offers geographic and technical complementarity with the Group’s nine other research and development centers, in particular the Kyoto Center in Japan, which this year celebrates its 20 years of existence. It helps speed up the development of customized products and solutions for 4

Arkema’s customers in China and South-East Asia in fast-growing markets, namely batteries, photovoltaics, electronics packaging, automotive, cable, sports and paint. The CRDC will enable Arkema, which has already established many contacts and collaborations with the Changshu and Shanghai Universities, to strengthen its links with the Chinese scientific community at large. With a team of top researchers, most of them young graduates from leading universities, Arkema provides genuine expertise and first-rate customer support on the Group’s products, in particular high performance materials, fluorinated polymers, organic peroxides, and performance coatings. Finally, the CRDC boasts state-of-the-art equipment, including application laboratories for batteries, membranes and coatings, a center of excellence for thermoplastics (extrusion, injection, etc), a process expertise center (pilot reactor systems, polymerization, distillation), as well as a training center for customers. PPG to reinstate Coraflon brand name PPG Industries’ coil and extrusion coatings group has reversed its previous decision to market its fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE)based powder coatings line under the brand name Newlar. PPG obtained the Newlar brand name upon its acquisition of Spraylat Corp in Dec 2013. The company will now sell its FEVE-based powder coatings using its former brand name, Coraflon. The decision was made to provide consistency in the market. C O AT I N G S PPG showcased liquid, powder, pretreatment, e-coat products at FABTECH 2013 PPG Industries’ (PPG) industrial coatings business showcased its full assortment of liquid, powder, pretreatment and electrocoat (ecoat) products at FABTECH 18 Nov-21 Nov 2013 at McCormick Place in Chicago. In addition, Kelly Moore, PPG development chemist, industrial coatings, presented an Introduction to Electrocoating, a technical seminar that was part of the continuing education programme at FABTECH, from 8 am to 10 am Central Time on 19 Nov. A sampling of products PPG displayed included well-known brands such as Powercron electrocoat, Envirocron, Coraflon and Duranar powder coatings, Aquacron and Spectracron liquid coatings, and X-Bond and Zircobond pretreatment products. PPG also highlighted the Ultrapax coatings system, a packaged collection of pretreatment products and powder coatings, and Dragonhide coatings, introduced in 2013 as a lowercost alternative to Durabull polyurea-based protective coatings. During the Introduction to Electrocoating seminar, Moore reviewed the anodic and cathodic e-coat processes, and epoxy- and acrylic-based paints and their use. He also discussed various pigments and resins used to coat everyday items and how to improve their performance and durability.
