First up is the Orid identifier which performs a non-destructive field test of an O-ring seal to identify its make up and compatability with the medium. Artesian Aquifers and t h e Effect of Pumping Apparently, Nebraskans are quite worried about declining water levels in some domestic and stock wells. The problem arises when water is pumped from confined or artesian aquifers. This article in fact dates back to 1977, but the University of Nebraska brought it online fairly recently. It covers ways of recognizing confined aquifers, how they recharge, and how overpumping damage can be avoided. Clearly, however, some sort of multi-media prodigy also walks its halls. This is getting ridiculous, we know, but we're forced once again to marvel at the level of presentation being provided. The (presumably Flash-powered) Perlast® Perfluoroelastomer demo here is impressive, but the O-ring intro is just plain fancy. If you visit, don't miss it. But hold on, a few words about the content too. The News Section makes good reading, with updates on some hygienic process plant projects, a diesel engine initiative and a neutrino-tracking experiment. PPE'stime spent elastomer engineering has led to the development of a wide range of compounds which are continually being updated and improved. The descriptive sketches aren't fantastic, suggesting the use of a pipe that opens into the current, and a turbine driven by same. Presumably it works, but you might want to find out more about US Patent 5611677 on www.patents.ibm. corn You may not wish to spend much time at the parent site - invention.com.
