Bachus The Bachus Company's founder and motivating force is Larry Bachus, who says he has more than a quarter century of experience in the industrial pump area. His areas of expertise include diagnosing pump problems and seal failure, wvv~bachusinc.com is easily worth a visit, not least to catch sight of a couple of his unique brainwaves. First up is the Orid identifier which performs a non-destructive field test of an O-ring seal to identify its make up and compatability with the medium. The Turbo Tank process pump double seal support system is another interesting item, which apparently enhances the service life of rotating equipment. www.bachosinc.corn

Artesian Aquifers and t h e Effect of Pumping Apparently, Nebraskans are quite worried about declining water levels in some domestic and stock wells. The problem arises when water is pumped from confined or artesian aquifers. This article in fact dates back to 1977, but the University of Nebraska brought it online fairly recently. It covers ways of recognizing confined aquifers, how they recharge, and how overpumping damage can be avoided. The presentation isn't world beating, but it's a fascinating exploration of the effects of what seems a fairly innocuous activity, on the immediate environment. www. ianr. unl. ~du/pubs/ Irrigation/g358.htm

Versamatic Pumps Versamatic Pumps' yellow colour scheme runs strongly through here, so you're never in much danger of forgetting where you are. The Case Study sections are short and sweet, serving in fact to guide you swiftly to the product involved in the real life application. The Innovations button is a good insight on what's hot in diaphragm pump technology, in which Versamatic is a leader - the company has focused great attention on the development of an extensive family of diaphragms that offer longer flex-life. Elsewhere, be sure look through the extensive Troubleshooting Guide covering issues like bending and breaking shafts, premature diaphragm failure, sluggish running and product leakage. Most of these, though, you'll hopefully never even encounter. www.versamatic.com

Precision P o l y m e r Engineering PPE, established in 1974, produces rubber components (like seals) for critical applications. Clearly, however, some sort of multi-media prodigy also walks its halls. This is getting ridiculous, we know, but we're forced once again to marvel at the level of presentation being provided. The (presumably Flash-powered) Perlast® Perfluoroelastomer demo here is impressive, but the O-ring intro is just plain fancy. If you visit, don't miss it. But hold on, a few words about the content too. The News Section makes good reading, with updates on some hygienic process plant projects, a diesel engine initiative and a neutrino-tracking experiment. PPE'stime spent elastomer engineering has led to the development of a wide range of compounds which are continually being updated and improved. So click on any of the Compound Types to view generous datasheets based upon them. Okay, that's that done. Now for just one more look at that O-ring "movie... www.prepol.com

River P u m p Device Another "energy-free" invention for moving water up a hill. This time however, the concept isn't a ram pump. The descriptive sketches aren't fantastic, suggesting the use of a pipe that opens into the current, and a turbine driven by same. Presumably it works, but you might want to find out more about US Patent 5611677 on www.patents.ibm. corn You may not wish to spend much time at the parent site - invention.com. It should be a crime that anything with such a great domain name should look so rubbishy. www.invention, ama.htm

range of products for engineering problems. It's now become a well established developer of Pump Selection and Pipe Friction Analysis Software, but it's interesting to see how comprehensively these products are supported online. Accordingly, vsx.net is a deceptively elaborate presentation.
