teen other papers follow, that each address some aspect o f integrating CAD with AI and/ or PR. The candid discussions following each paper cement the ideas in these individual contrubutions. These discussions themselves add ideas to the b o o k so that the reader begins to see the integration of the flow o f ideas. The papers deal with such diverse topics as architecture, printed circuit board design, man-machine interaction and mechanical design. Yet, the fundamental theme of the b o o k - that there are generic ideas related to the synergistic interplay of these f i e l d s - is preserved. And for further reading, all of the great names in these fields are referenced either directly or indirectly in the citations found with each paper. If there is a fault to be found with the book, it is a minor point. Because the book is so rich in ideas, it would have been nice to have a subject index. As it is, each reader must read the entire book to find the references to various ideas. This b o o k is destined to become a classic in any complete CAD library. It surely points to the future o f the field.

Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition in Computer Aided Design Jean-Claude Latombe, Editor North-Holland Publishing Co. 510 Pages, ISBN 0-444-85229-8

The fields o f Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Pattern Recognition (PR) have both contributed to making computers more useful. Each field has helped computers perform "intellectual" tasks. Some well-known applications are medical diagnosis and industrial robotics. In the past several years, various projects have attempted to incorporate some AI or PR into computer programs intended to aid engineering design. It seems to be the opinion o f the leaders in the CAD field that this new direction will become a major trend in the near future. Because o f the evident interest, Working Group 5.2. (CAD) o f the International Federation for Information Processing sponsored an international working conference of experts from the three fields o f CAD, AI and PR. The conference's goal was to establish the basis for this new direction. This b o o k presents the proceedings o f that Working Conference in a very readable form. The b o o k begins with overview papers covering each o f the three topic areas. Seven-
