O peration D esert Shield □ D u rin g th e re c e n t call-up o f Army reservists fo r service d u rin g O peration D esert Shield, several civilian orthodontists w ho have b een treating Army reservists m ade a generous and u n ex p e cted offer th a t I th in k should be recognized by the d ental profession. W hile p rep a rin g soldiers for deploym ent we le arn ed th a t those with ortho d o n tic appliances (braces) could n o t deploy because they could n o t receive treatm ent at their deploym ent sites. As a result, a n u m b e r o f reservists had to have braces re moved. This h ad the potential o f causing them considerable finan cial hardship if they would have had to pay to have the braces rep la ce d . However, som e o f th e ir o rth o d o n tists o ffe re d to rem ove th e braces an d reapply them at no cost after these re servists h ad served their duty. We greatly appreciate this kind o f u n d erstanding and sup port for the hardships an d sacrifices our reservists are sustain ing as a result o f their service to our nation. We are asking a lo t o f th em rig h t now, an d it is h earten in g to know at least som e will have one less co n cern u p o n th e ir re tu rn to th eir civilian lives. WILLIAM F.
