Laboratory model tests using composite beams of different combinations of materials were carried out. All tests included loading of an unbolted beam for comparison purposes. From the study, it is concluded that: (1) the effectiveness of the bolts depends on the nature of the strata in the beam, the number of bolts in a given span, and the load applied; (2) the beam displacements can be reduced if the number of bolts in a given span increases: and (3) beam deflection is minimized when higher modulus materials form the lower bed in the beam.

Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1984 The results of the experiments performed on two-dimensional models demonstrate that the governing factor affecting the value of the ultimate pullout force is the horizontal compression of the models simulating natural stresses in the rock mass. Disregarding this factor in analytical relationships derived in the USSR and elsewhere may lead to a significant underestimation of the design ultimate force required for an anchor embedment pullout. 851303 Swedish experience of rock bolting. A keynote lecture Habenicht, H Proc International Symposium on Rock Bolting, Abisko, 28 August-2 September 1983 P257-268. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1984 Anchoring effects can be delineated into 4 different mechanisms each of which can be described by a mechanical model: the suspension effect, the nailing effect, the beam building effect and the arch building effect. The shortcomings of these models are not so apparent with the suspension effect and the nailing effect as they are with the beam building effect and the arch building effect. 851305 Rock bolting in France. Between 1969 and 1976 rock bolting was used extensively as the final support system in coal and potash mining. Since 1976 bolting has been used in roadways affected by creep; a "Rock Bolt Comprehensive Control System' has been developed and has allowed the successful use of bolts in carboniferous rocks. 851308 US Bureau of Mines rock bolting research Bolstad, D D; Hill, J R M; Karhnak, J M K Proc International Symposium on Rock Bolting, Abisko, 28 August-2 September 1983 P313-320. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1984 US Bureau of Mines research efforts have focused on the development of systems to install rock reinforcements remotely. and in studies to define the interaction mechanics between rock mass and support systems. Remote manual roof borers, a fibreglass epoxy-resin pumpable roof-bolting system, and automated borer modules are being developed. Systems are also being developed to grout rock bolts remotely in mine roof through application of a slurry injection system using low-cost, fast-setting gypsum cement. A device to evaluate the bond quality of full-column grouted bolts nondestructively is also under development. A full-scale geotechnical model of a coal mine entry, in correlation with finite-element analysis, is being used in the area of roof-bolt support interaction mechanics. 851309 Grouted bolts used in underground engineering in soft surrounding rock or in highly stressed regions Sun Xueyi Proc International Symposium on Rock Bolting, Abisko, 28 August-2 September 1983 P345-351. Balkema. 1984 Examines the current state of knowledge of the failure, dimensioning and stress distribution of grouted anchors. The breaking phenomenon of an anchor grouted into brittle rock is examined by means of" elaboration of a behavioural model deduced from the literature; laboratory and field testing: computer analysis of results.
