Associate Editor Dr. Fred L. Pearce to Retire from International Immunopharmacology In January of 1997, the editors of Immunopharmacology were Dr. Jack R. Battisto, the Founding Editorin-Chief, along with Drs. Ichiro Azuma, John. C. Foreman and me as Associate Editors. Dr. Foreman had already served as an Editor of the journal for many years as our expert in allergy and inflammation. By June of 1997, Dr. Foreman had resigned leaving a void on the editorial staff for his area of expertise. Between this (Vol. 36) June issue and the August issue (Vol. 37) of Immunopharmacology, Dr. Battisto and I convinced Paul Taylor of Elsevier that we needed to bring an additional Editor on board that could help us process manuscripts in the area of allergy and inflammation. This is when we contacted Dr. Fred L. Pearce and asked if he would accept the position of Associate Editor of the journal. Fortunately for the journal, Dr. Pearce accepted our invitation and served the journal Immunopharmacology faithfully and well for the next 3 years. He became our new expert in allergy, inflammation, signal transduction

events and a mast cell guru. Then, in January of 2001, the merger of Immunopharmacology with International Journal of Immunopharmacology occurred. Thus, a new journal called International Immunopharmacology (INTIMP) was born. The Co-Editors of INTIMP, Dr. James E. Talmadge and me, agreed to select the best Associate Editors and Editorial Board personnel from each parent journal as the editorial staff for the new journal. Of course, this meant that Dr. Pearce was asked to continue his Associate Editorial duties along with Dr. J.M. Wang from Immunopharmacology and Drs. F. Abe and K. Matsushima from International Journal of Immunopharmacology. Since that January 2001, Vol. 1 (No. 1) issue of International Immunopharmacology, Dr. Pearce has been a key member of the editorial staff for the journal. His experience and expertise have been invaluable assets in maintaining the quality of the journal. He assumed his significant work-load effortlessly, or so it appeared. Dr. Talmadge, the Publisher and I acknowledge and offer our sincere gratitude to Dr. Pearce for his contribution, willing assistance and professionalism as an Editor. During this time, he worked with us as the journal adopted a series of electronic submission and reviewing programs that added significantly to our entertainment. We especially want to thank him for being a part of the team that helped guide INTIMP through the critical merger years and for working toward our goal of providing an ever improving journal for our readers. Dr. Pearce will be missed both as colleague and co-worker and his legacy will continue within the covers of International Immunopharmacology. T.E. Hugli* J.E. Talmadge E-mail address:
