ECGs
G J Taylor Blackwell Science1997 ISBN 0 86542 511 6 Al9.50 This book has been written for doctors studying for American Board examinations and is based upon an ECG curriculum that is practice driven. The influence of using clinical work as a base for learning about ECGs is evident throughout the book, and diagrams are used to illustrate learning points being made. The book is presented in two parts, the first provides an overview of what the ECG is and how it should be understood. The second part of the book provides the reader with a wide variety of practice ECGs. Answers to practice ECGs are also available. The reader should take particular notice of the introduction which emphasizes the use of a protocol for reading and understanding the ECG, with reference to the clinical examination of the patient. The message of the whole book is that the accurate reading of ECGs contributes to the management of the patient. A & E nurses will find this a useful starter and reference book. Lynn C. Adolescent differences
health:
the role of individual
P C L Heaven Routledge 1996 ISBN 0 4151 1579 5 Al4.99 In light of the current focus on adolescent physical and mental health, this book is particularly topical. It has wide appeal for anyone who is a health professional or educator or has an interest in topics such as body image and associated eating behaviours, sex and AIDS, substance abuse and mental health, all dealt with by the author from a psychosocial perspective. The author approaches these topics from a health perspective, setting the scene in the first chapter with an introduction to the concepts of health and illness and the importance of health education and strategies for achieving appropriate health outcomes. The final chapter discusses methods of empowering youths to take control of their own health. The text is well researched, citing a wide variety of contemporary studies. It provides a critique of current theories in treatment which indicates that differences between individuals must be understood and acknowledged to understand the health of adolescents. The book
is easily read which makes it useful not only for health professionals but also for those who often must deal with the problems described but with little preparation, ie families and teachers. Prof C. M. Duteld,

Asylum
in the community
D Tomlinson, J Carrier (Eds) Routledge 1996 ISBN 0 4151 0743 1 I have been asked to review many books during the course of my career and I can honestly say that this is the first book I have reviewed that had me engrossed from page one. The authors take you on a detailed historical tour of the care of psychiatric patients from the last century to modern times. It visits several countries and discusses asylum and what it meant and means today. It gives the reader a detailed insight into the objectives of asylum for the founders of the ‘asylum movement’ in the nineteenth century It questions the fact that true asylum may be lost with the closure of many psychiatric hospitals. The case histories discussed are very honest and, in my opinion, question whether Care in the Community will meet the needs of such patients and is it everything we are led to believe it is? The book is well written, easy to read and I believe will be of use to any nurse or doctor in whatever field they work. It will be a valuable reference book to those studying for various courses. The book is crammed with interesting historical information which helps the reader understand what the word asylum really means and how today’s society deals with asylum and crisis. Asylum in the Community is not only a must for those of us in the caring profession to read, but needs to be on the bookstands for the general public to read.
