AT&T profits fall World's biggest company, AT&T has reported profits down by a quarter for the three months ended September 30, 1983. Net income was $1460M, compared to $2020M for the third quarter of 1982. 'The lingering effects of recession are still with us', said chairman of the board, Charles L Brown. Bell is also suffering from the effects of preparing for its divestiture (split into smaller operating groups). Earnings per share for the quarter were $1.51 on 945M shares. Last year's figure was $2.32 on 858M shares. On average total capital of $123 000M for the quarter, the rate of return was 8.21% compared to 10.67% on $11"/O00M for the year ago period. For the nine months ending in September, net income was $5120M compared to $5"/80M reported for the same nine months in 1982.
Bigger sales mean more staff at Intel Intel plans to double its staff in the UK over the next two years. 'Our business is undergoing a major expansion with a very high demand for our products. We will have increased sales by 50% this year despite the recession', said UK regional manager Peter Haverson. The recruitment drive will push UK staffing up from the present level of 2"/0. The initial search area is along the 'M4 high tech corridor'. The M4 is a motorway to the west of London, around which many computer and electronics companies are located.
The UK-made Husky microcomputer is helping Thames and Southern water authorities to improve the efficiency of surveys being carried out ot~ large sewer systems. The 144 kbyte memory o f the portable waterproof microcomputer stores survey data for subsequent processing and analysis, replacing traditional pencil-and-paper methods of recording defects. Operator prompts and menu selections are displayed on the four-line liquid-crystal display, Each data entry is logged against a specific time and date. Stored data can be sent via an acoustic coupler down telephone lines to a mainframe computer. The Husky a/so has a printer port for hard copy output of survey resu/ts.
