Surgical Treatment of Unequal Extremities. By CharIes Weer Guff,

approaches to the extremities. This is done by a series of regiona1, bIack and white photographs. The dissection of each region is exceIIent and structures are individuaIIy the significant IabeIed. The photographs are superb. There is an expIanatory Iegend accompanying each photograph. After the entire region is deveIoped by these series of anatomic studies, one or two of the incisions used to expose this area are presented. In this fashion the author acquaints the reader with how “to visualize accurateIy what Iies just beyond the retractor.” Many of us prefer different types of medica iIIustrations rather than actua1 photographs of an anatomic specimen. In this text, however, this prejudice wiI1 be cast aside because of the exceIIence of both the anatomic dissections and the photography. In voIume two the regions covered are the Iumbar and sacra1 plexus, the gIutea1 region and the Iower extremities. This book shouId suppIement other standard textbooks on anatomic exposures. It shouId be incIuded in most Iibraries on anatomy as weI1. It is highIy recommended for those physicians who perform extremity surgery or for those who are preparing for their speciaIty boards or surgical board examinations. The author deserves the highest commendation. P. R. M.

Doctor Goff is aIready we11 known for his work on disturbances of growth in chiIdren, and has been an instructor on the “Surgical Care of UnequaI Extremities” for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. In this book, the author gives briefly a comprehensive account of his persona1 experiences in the surgica1 treatment of unequa1 extremities of chiIdren at the Newington HospitaI for CrippIed ChiIdren, and gives a r&umi: of the work done by other authorities in dealing with this probIem. The dangers and compIications of Iengthening a Ieg by surgery are discussed. The methods of measuring the Iegs accurateIy are given with a timely warning about the indiscriminate taking of roentgenograms. A chapter is devoted to the stimuIation of growth in Iong bones and mentions venous stasis and intentiona osteotomy also of the Iong bones. Foreign substances and the insertion of dissimiIar screws near the epiphysea1 pIates are evaIuated and seem to cause no significant growth stimulation. The author was not enthusiastic about the Iumbar sympathetic gangIiectomy. No mention was made of the effect of an induced arteriovenous fistuIa. In Chapter v, growth control by stapIes, and the permanent epiphysiodesis of Phemister are described. AIso, several exceIIent growth charts are incIuded which wiI1 be of use to every clinician interested in this probIem. This carefuIIy written book should be avaiIabIe to every surgeon contempIating the treatment of unequa1 Ieg Iength in chiIdren. B. W.

The Rehabilitation of Patients with Deep Burns Connected with the Recovery of Functions and Sensation of Grafted Skin Areas. A Clinical, Histological and Experimental Study. By A. J. Sneep, J. F. Folkerts and H. A. MeyIing. 70 pages. North-HoIIand Publishing Co. Amsterdam, rgfg. $7.00.

The object of this book is to consider: (I) IocaI treatment for burns and the recovery of sensation in the affected skin areas and (2) recovery of function of the skin areas of the hands and joints. The authors carried out primary excision and autografting if the burn was Iimited to 20 per cent of the body surface. The pin prick test was used to establish fuI1 thickness 10s~. In the more extensive burn they were not impressed with the use of homografts in the late treatment but feIt that they were of advantage when the earIy excision technic was used.

From the titIe one expects that this is just another book on surgica1 approaches. This is certainIy not the case and the author has contributed a fascinating and exciting textbook, if such there can be, on anatomy and surgica1 American
