Tumours of the large bowel represent one of the commonest oncological problems in the Western World and indeed colorectal carcinoma is the second commonest cause of cancer mortality throughout Northern Europe, North America and Australasia. This beautifully produced colour atlas presents in graphic form an interesting survey of the anatomy of the large bowel, classification of tumours, clinical features, pre-cancerous conditions (with a detailed account of colorectal polyps and the polyp/carcinoma sequence), pathological staging, treatment, results of therapy and techniques of screening. The illustrations are large, profuse, clear and many are in colour, as are the diagrams and charts. There are excellent colour photographs of both macroscopic and microscopic material and clear electron microscopic illustrations. The text reads well in its English translation and there is an up-to-date and international bibliography. The section on polyps and on the adenomacarcinoma sequence is particularly praiseworthy. This atlas provides an excellent review of this important subject which will be of especial value to the postgraduate student. The only disappointment is that malignant tumours other than carcinoma are dismissed in halfa page and without a single illustration. Perhaps further editions could include more details of these admittedly uncommon but nevertheless interesting lesions.
