Book Review Atlas of Infectious Diseases of the Female Genital Tract, by Richard L. Sweet and Ronald S. Gibbs, 172 pp, with illus, $79.95, Philadelphia, Pa, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (telephone: 800-638-3030), 2005, ISBN 0-7817-5583-2. Type and Scope of Book: A photographic atlas of diseases involving the female genital tract. Contents: This atlas provides information on specific organisms and certain infectious disease processes involving the female urogenital tract. The chapters provide color and/or black-and-white photographs along with histological slides that are designed to help practitioners recognize and diagnose specific diseases. Group B streptococci, chlamydial infections, herpes simplex virus, sexually transmitted diseases, vulvovaginitis, urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, perinatal and obstetric infections, and wound infections are covered, among others. Many evaluation and treatment algorithms and tables outlining recommended antibiotic regimens are provided. Limited information is included regarding the use of certain antimicrobial agents in pregnant and lactating patients, as well as recommended adult immunization schedules. Strengths: The diagnostic and treatment algorithms and recommended antibiotic regimens provide a useful quick reference source for clinical practice. Deficiencies: Considering that this volume is a photographic atlas, the quality of many of the illustrations is suboptimal. The captions inadequately describe the content of the figures, and the photographs and radiographs are not well labeled. Recommended Readership: Students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians specializing in women’s health care. Overall Grading: ## Carrie B. Allemand, MD, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minn
