books in brief Atlas of Orthopaedic Pathology with Clinical and Radiologic Correlations, by Peter G Bullough MB ChB and Vincent J Vigorita MD. Butterworth, London, 1984 (ISBN 0407

Photographs, line diagrams, microscope sections, X-rays and text are used in conjunction to make this a real 'atlas' of the human skeletal system in health and disease. The illustrations are also produced in slide form for the use of teachers - details of availability are given in the book. The authors are professor and assistant professor of pathology respectively at Cornell University Medical College, New York, and American terms and spellings pervade this brightly coloured, glossy, weighty and oversize book. It is difficult not to be impressed by the clarity and comprehensiveness of this lavishly produced publication. Physiology for Nursing Practice, edited by Susan M Hinchliff BA SRN RNT and Susan E Montague BSc SRN HVDip RNT. Baillibre Tindall, London, 1988 (ISBN 0 7020 1194 0).680 pages. Illus. €15. The principles and mechanisms of normal body function and how they alter in illness are described in this book. It is divided into sections which illustrate the body as a complex homoeostatic system - characteristics of living matter; control and coordination; mobility and support; internal

transport; acquisition of nutrients and removal of waste; and protection and survival. Each section is sub-divided into chapters featuring learning objectives, emphasised key terms, diagrams, flow charts, and multiple choice review questions. Closely allied to nursing practice, this text is not specifically for physiotherapists, but its clear format would make it a useful revision tool and in shedding light from a different angle it might clarify the subject by providing a different perspective. Coping with Sudden Hair Loss, by Elizabeth Steel. Thorsons, Wellingborough, 1988 (ISBN 0 7225 1492 1). 176 pages. €4.99. At the height of a successful career as a television presenter, the author of this book lost all her hair through alopecia areata. Finding very little knowledge and counselling available, and the vast sums charged for ineffective 'treatments' offered to restore it, she formed the self-help group Hairline. Almost entirely composed of short case histories, presumably to reassure the reader that with one person in every hundred being likely to lose hair through disease, no sufferer need be alone, this book contains some useful information (mainly negative) about the efficacy of various treatments, and large doses of encouragement in living with the condition without undue stress.
