NEWS AND VIEWS Avecia completes upgrade to UK preservatives plant Avecia’s Protection & Hygiene group has completed a &500 000 upgrade to its PROXELTM preservatives production plant in Huddersfield, UK. The facility makes the 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) component for Avecia’s range of PROXEL in-can preservatives, typically used in synthetic polymer emulsions, paints and various household products. The plant is widely recognized as one of the most advanced in the industry, and employs unique continuous processing technology. Avecia is a leading producer of antimicrobials, with products that cover a wide range of industrial and consumer protection and hygiene applications. The major upgrade and refit took just four weeks of round-the-clock engineering work, replacing electrical cabling, pipe-work and steel-work. “This investment has delivered an upgraded plant with increased efficiency and underlines the depth of our commitment to the sector and to our key customers”, comments Avecia vice president for Protection & Hygiene Martin Howden. Part of Avecia’s Specialty Products segment, Avecia Protection & Hygiene develops and produces antimicrobials for more than 25 applications in industrial preservation, disinfection, plastics, textile antimicrobials and personal care/cosmetics. In addition to the PROXELTM in-can preservatives, primary brands include VANQUISHTM antimicrobials for plastics, VANTOCILTM hygiene-assist antimicrobials, REPUTEXTM antimicrobials for textiles, COSMOCILTM preservatives for cosmetics and DENSILTM fungicides.

Atofina and Ciba Specialty Chemicals expand e-business activities Atolina Chemicals Inc is to make a broad range of its polymer additives available through PolymerAdditives.com LLC. On offer will be Atofina’s Durastrength@ and Metabler@ acrylic (weatherable) and MBS impact modifiers for PVC and engineering resins, Thermolite@ organotin heat stabilizers for PVC, the S tavinorTM calcium stearate line, Vikoflex@ epoxidized plasticizers for PVC, and several products from the Luperox@ line of organic peroxides. The companies expect the products to be available from PolymerAdditives.com by January. “Combining Atofina’s leading plastic additives position with PolymerAdditives.com’s strong partners and e-business capabilities provides the market with a broader range of complementary products with enhanced services”, says Stephen Hulme, general manager, Atofina Additives, Americas. According to Sean McKeon, president of PolymerAdditives, the addition of Atofina’s products strengthens PolymerAdditives.com’s existing portfolio of polymer additives from Albemarle Corp, Cytec Industries and GE Specialty Chemicals. “Our customers are looking for suppliers that can provide a broad range of products and technical solutions”, he says. The company’s e-business tools allow customers to place, modify and trace orders, and receive realtime order confirmations, on-line. through the www.specialchem.com platform. The site also offers technical data sheets, Material Safety Data Sheets and performance data for all products available through this portal, as well as technical presentations. Atofina’s Additives Business group has also become a member of SpecialChem’s TechCenter and will provide technical information in three major categories: acrylic impact modifiers, organotinbased heat stabilizers and acrylic-based processing aids. The two deals demonstrate the Additives Division’s aim to apply innovative ecustomer strategies to actively expand its worldwide presence, develop stronger customer relationships and create new opportunities, the company says. News of the Atofina/SpecialChem agreement came hot on the heels of Ciba Specialty Chemicals’ announcement of its participation in SpecialChem’s online knowledge and technical solutions platform. Ciba will provide expertise and technical assistance in the areas of antioxidants, UV stabilizers and fluorescent whitening agents to customers seeking online solutions to their technical problems. The company says that the participation in SpecialChem expands and complements its current e-business customer offerings, which include its own e-commerce site - mybusiness@cibasc -and its participation in Elemica. “SpecialChem offers an additional platform for Ciba to provide solutions principally to customers in the polymer industry who have technical questions”, says Felix Meyer, head of Ciba’s Plastic Additives Segment. For SpecialChem, the support of Ciba as a leading
global supplier of plastic additives credibility to the company’s business says co-founder Christophe Cabarry.
