Attend pre-Congress for a full day of education sessions Saturday, March 10,2001 re-Congress sessions will be held Saturday, March 10, 2001. To register for pre-Congress sessions, use the registration form in the registration brochure that was mailed to members in October 2000 or contact AORN customer service at (800) 755-2676 x 1. Early registration ends Jan 19, 2001. Note that registration will not be accepted after Jan 19, 200 1, for the education session “The Wave of Minimally Invasive Surgery” to be held at the Southwestern Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery in Dallas. On-site registration for pre-Congress and Congress will begin Friday, March 9, from 1 to 5 PM, in the Dallas Convention Center. Saturday, March 10, from 7 AM to 2 PM, will be preCongress registration. Pre-Congress participants who also are attending Congress may pick up Congress materials during the pre-Congress registration times. Most pre-Congress sessions will be held at the Dallas Convention Center. Registration fees are for half-day sessions and for one full-day session (Table 1). Contact hours (CH) are granted based on attendance at the entire session for which a participant registers. Certificates of Attendance for the pre-Congress sessions will be available on site. Most sessions will be audiotaped, and tapes will be available for purchase.

Holistic Support for Surgical Patients-Amanda MaHn Sanchez, RN, BSN, MS, CNOR. Holistic care is more than just a trend in the surgical setting. This session will take a closer look at defining holistic care and identifying current holistic elements used in the care of the surgical patient. A methodology for incorporating other holistic care modalities into current practice will be explored. Endorsed by the RNFA Specialty Assembly

Violence and Harassment: The Quest for Harmony in the OR-Mary Jo Steieft RN, CNOR, and Vivian C. Watson, RN, CNOR. Nurses constantly are reminded to be on guard against workplace violence and harassment. Those who work in the surgical arena have seen or even experienced inappropriate behavior. We may question whether the act constitutes harassment, whether there is an OR culture that creates an intimidating or hostile environment, and whether it must be tolerated. We also have experienced the emotional roller coaster of caring for patients who have experienced violence. This program will address OR mythology, define inappropriate behavior and violence, and suggest a plan to diffuse anger and promote harmony. The session also will explore the emotional effects of caring for

Surgical Services Management: Part OneDrew s. Cobb, MAS. Back by popular demand, Cobb will facilitate this all-day session that has been divided into parts one and two. Topics included in part one cover managing the contemporary workforce and communication in the age of technology. It is vital that perioperative managers understand managerial strategies that work and the role of information technology in collecting, storing, and retrieving data to be used for decision making.

Panel presentations by experts will include economical issues and safety aspects of MIS. There also will be a presentation of the ethical issues related to the use of new technology and the effects of patient education on best outcomes. Part of the afternoon session will include hands-on video training and information about laparoscopic ultrasound, laparoscopic hernia simulation, and virtual reality. The faculty will comprise numerous experts in the field. Attendees will be transported by bus to the Southwestern Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery.
