Audible signs to identify the epidural space The reassuring hiss which your correspondent, Dr P. Swayne (October 1994; 3: 238), describes is always a welcome sign to the epiduralist. When Massey Dawkins reviewed methods of identifying the epidural space 1 he classified them under tactile, visual, mechanical and ancillary. In the latter section he wrote: 'Occasionally... a hiss can be heard when the indicator is removed from the hub of the needle'. This is the earliest reference I am aware o f relating to audible methods of identifying
the epidural space, and I trust that your readers might be interested in this little historical note. R Miller Consultant Anaesthetist
