One of six tongue and groove regions (light blue, light red) of the enzyme ATCase is shown in relation to the whole molecule, in both the inactive form (T, upper image) and active form (R, lower image). The binding of allosteric ligands may make the fit between the tongue and groove better or worse in the T state and hinder or facilitate the clamping of a catalytic subunit (orange and brown) onto substrate, thus offering finer control over the activity of the enzyme in the cell.
