New UHV ionization gauge controller An Ionization Gauge Controller with 80 W of electron bombardment degas power and log-linear automatic/manual ranging has been developed. This new gauge controller has all the features necessary for reliable, accurate pressure measurement from about 1 x 10-Z torr to the X-ray limit of a nude gauge. The 80 W of degas power is double that supplied by most ionization gauge controllers and provides thorough cleaning of both nude and tubulated Bayard-Alpert gauges. Eight linear, automatic/manual ranging decades provide high resolution measurement capability. Or, for rapidly changing processes, six temperature stabilized log decades are available as standard equipment. Other features of the Series 271 Controller include overpressure protection of gauge filaments, front panel emission control from 100 PA to 10 mA, remote filament control, external relay contacts operated by the filament circuit, and front panel electrometer zero adjustment. Dual set point process control is available as an option. According to the manufacturers the series 271 Controller is well suited for applications involving thin film evaporation systems, optical coaters, space simulation chambers, particle accelerators, mass spectrometers, electron microscopes, and other analytical instrumentation. Automatic control of freeze-drying With this new unit, freezing, primary drying and secondary drying can all be carried out completely automatically and since the time taken for a complete drying cycle is usually in excess of 24 h, automation gives considerable saving in man hours. The unit can also be set for manual operation for precise determination of optimum cycle times. A special feature of the automatic control system is that if a power failure should occur, providing the power is restored within 5 min the freeze-drying cycle will recommence at the start of the freezing cycle. This feature can prevent loss of valuable freeze-dried products. The Edwards EF 1 O/l 0 is a high-capacity shelf freeze-dryer, suitable for bulk drying in trays, or drying in vials and ampoules. All the necessary instrumentation, including the automatic control system, is incorporated in a separate free-standing console which may be sited in a room adjacent to the vacuum chamber if required. A chart recorder is included on the console to monitor the drying sequence.

The first automatic EF lO/lO was developed by Edwards for the Blood Products Laboratory, Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, (University of London) at Elstree where it is being used in the preparation of human gamma globulin and other plasma proteins, either in bulk or in vials. The proteins are separated from the blood plasma by precipitation using organic solvents, or by other methods. Freeze-drying is used to remove residual water and solvent from the proteins after separation, leaving the product in a stable form suitable for storage.
