I:IEV Advances in Artificial Intelligence N a t u r a l L a n g u a g e and K n o w l e d g e - B a s e d Systems

Edited by Martin C. Golumbic Published by Springer-Verlag, Germany 1990, Hardcover, 303 pp, Price: DM 78 ISBN: 3 540 97355 9 Research into this field has blossomed in the last ten years and this has been particularly true in Israel which has hosted several international symposia on the subject. This book contains a selection of contributions presented at recent AI conferences held in Israel. The fourteen contributions cover design and architecture, morphology, linguistic analysis, intelligent tutoring and training systems, and semantics for constraint based systems. of researchers in this field. The papers are classified under Professional Issues (3), Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (3), Construction Planning (3), Construction Management (7), Building Design (1), Structural Analysis (3), Structural Design (9), Earthquake Engineering (2), Geotechnical Engineering (3), Robotics and Civil Engineering (1) and Education and Expert Systems (2) (numbers in parentheses are the number of papers in each chapter). Apart from Chapters 1 and 2, the papers are mainly about issues related to expert systems. Only two papers address general concepts relating to expert systems (those by Mitchell, Expert Systems and Engineering Management, and by Rowlinson, Knowledge Based Systems: Potential in Design and Management). More review papers would have been worthwhile. A useful bibliography by Topping and Kumar is included. The volume represents a useful source of reference for those who want to keep up to date with research in this area.

The book reviews the job responsibilities of the knowledge engineer and describes how to start and plan an AI project, providing a variety of practical examples. The book covers prototyping, modeling and testing, and tools such as expert system shells, and the interface between user and intelligent machines. Contents cover computer aided software engineering, second generation expert systems, AI in CAD, AI in day to day operations, robotics and vision, mathematics of uncertainty, and supercomputers in AI. A u t o n o m o u s R o b o t Vehicles

Edited by LJ. Cox and G.T. Wilfong Published by Springer-Verlag, Germany 1990, Hardcover, Price: DM 138 ISBN: 3 540 97240 4 Autonomous robot vehicles are vehicles capable of intelligent motion and action without requiring either a guide or teleoperator control. This reference is the first to deal directly with their unique and fundamental problems and recent progress associated with autonomous vehicles. The material has been gathered from a wide range of journals and conferences, and bringing them together in this single volume provides a unique service to readers. Such vehicles are currently being studied for use in exploration in the undersea, land and air. They are also being studied for remote repair, maintenance, material handling for offices and factories, and even wheelchairs for the disabled. Edited by R.A. Meersman, Zhongzhi Shi, and Cheng-Ho Kung Published by Elsevier Science Publishers, Netherlands 1990, Hardback, 598 pp, Price: US $ l10.25/Dfi 215 ISBN: 0 444 88645 1 These are the proceedings of the IFIP TC2 WG2.6/TC8 WG8.1 Working conference, Guangzhou, China, 4-8 July 1988. Database/Information System design, implementation and operation is a complex problem-solving task, where expert knowledge is needed. Use of artificial intelligence techniques and principles may help to acquire, represent, and manipulate this knowledge, resulting in the enrichment of database semantics. P r o g r a m m i n g for Artificial Intelligence M e t h o d s , Tools a n d A p p l i c a t i o n s

By W. Kreutzer and B. KcKenzie Published by Addison-Wesley, Berkshire, UK tlardback, 680 pp, Price: 2721.95 ISBN: 0 201 41621 2 This book combines an overview of the history and philosophy of AI with an account of how AI programs actually work and how they are constructed, as well as the language choices, tools, techniques and environments available. The book surveys the three major programming 'paradigms' which affect the way programs are written and looks at specific approaches to AI programming, the programming 'metaphors'. Each section is concluded with exercises and there is an extensive bibliography. Generalpurpose software 'toolboxes' are available on disk for use in constructing actual AI programs.
