Award w i n n i n g composite construction system A reinforced plastic construction system currently being used as a bridge enclosure for the A19 Tyne Tees viaduct in t he UK, r e c e n t l y won an a w a r d f o r its d e v e l o p e r Maunsell Structural Plastics of London, UK. The system, which consists of interlocking glass fibrereinforced plastic structural components, was placed second in the Castrol MultiPlant and Construction News Research and Development award. Maunsell says t h a t t h e geometry of the system components, most of which are p u l t r u d e d , p r o v i d e s for a large range of different: high p e r f o r m a n c e s t r u c t u r e s including floors, walls, columns, beams, roofs and complete cellular structures. The Tyne Tees b r i d g e , which is the first application of the system, is now nearing

completion. The project involved t h e i n s t a l l a t i o n of s o m e 16 000 m ~ of t h e composite system as a structural floor.
