842001 Proceedings of the 24th US Symposium on Rock Mechanics, College Station, Texas, 20-23 June 1983 AEG, 1983, 856P 86 papers presented at the 24th US Symposmm on the theme 'Rock Mechamcs Theory-Expenment-Pracuce' 842002 Some applications of the boundary element method in geomechanics Ventunm, W S, Brebbm, C A Int J Num Anal Metk Geomech V7, N4, Oct-Dec 1983, P419-433 Describes how the boundary element method can be apphed to solve no-tensmn material problems m geomechamcs. Examples ofthe method's use are presented a bolted tunnel, a steep valley, and a hned tunnel 842003 CEZEAU: a project for a terminology data bank in soil mechanics (In French) Rev Fr Geotech N21, Nov 1982, P75-76 842004 International Geotechnical Congress at Stockholm. Tufts and hmestone deposits do not come w~thm the usual speclficatmns for the choice of roadmaking materials. But they seem to behave acceptably m roads put into service some fifteen years ago The author attempts to explain thts apparent contradlctmn He defines these materials, identifies their locatmn throughout the world, describes their process of formatmn and their age, and recapitulates the factors revolved m the reconnaissance of hmestone deposits or factors on which the characteristics of hmestone deposits depend. For the purpose of thts study, the author has taken four samples from Tumsm which make ~t possible to better define the mineralogical and geotechmcal aspects of these materials 842008 Dependence of probabiHstic stresses on relative density in granular media Chlkwendu, S C lnt J gngng Sci VI9, NIl, 1981, P1449-1454

A formula is derived relating the dtffusmn analogy constant to the relatwe density for the probabthsttc predtction of stresses m a half space of granular material subjected to normal surface loads Agreement w~th experimental data for sands ~s fairly good over a wide range of relatwe densities Auth 842009 Axisymmetrical elasto-plastic behaviour of reinforced earth. Short communication Sawlckl, A int J Num Anal Meth Geomech V7, N4, Oct-Dec 1983, P493-498 A macroscopic descnptmn of the behawour of an axtsymmetric specimen of soft, remforced by membranes, through elastic and elasto-plast~c states up to the hm~t state

Rewews conventmnal structural safety criteria m the form of factors of safety and then exammes the relattonshtp between safety and stabdtty within the context of stress analysis

842010 Efficient finite element scheme for elastic porous media Kanok-Nukulchai, W, Suans, V M int J Solids Struct V18, NI, 1982, t)37-49

Properties of Rocks and Soils

A sem~-analyttcal fimte element scheme, based on Blot's Theory, for the analysts of diffusion processes m hnear elastic porous medm Js presented A Laplace transformatton removes any time dependency Three types of quadrilateral plane strain fimte elements are tested for their performance m solving 2-D consohdatlon problems The quadrilateral element with 8 displacement and 4 pore pressure nodes shows the best overall performance
