Voice-grade modem contains stats multiplexer Modem builder Paradyne of the US has announced a voice-grade 19 200 bit/s modem with integral statistical multiplexer. Aggregate speeds up to 38 400 bit/s can be achieved over single leased CCITT 1020 line, says the firm. The MP-192 gives eight or 16 channels of statistical multiplexing with a concentration ratio of up to 2:1. Satellite and split-stream network configurations can be supported. The modem accommodates synchronous speeds from 1200 to 12 000 bit/s and asynchronous speeds from 50 to 9600 bit/s says Paradyne. The multiplexer has a command port that allows an asynchronous ASCII terminal to initiate local and remote diagnostic tests, to perform port configurations and to obtain periodic traffic reports and alarm information. Signal processing functions are carried out by microprocessors in the transmitter and receiver. Multiplexer configuration parameters are stored in both the local and remote units. The price of the MP192 is £9000 with an 8-port multiplexer and £12 000 with a 16-port multiplexer. Another modem announced by Paradyne can be initialized in 253 ms and has a throughput delay of only 11 ms, according to the firm. The Challenger 14.4 is based on a single circuit card and operates at 14 400 bit/s. The device has a built-in pattern

generator. The one-off price of the Challenger 14.4 is £2995. Analysis 550 is a network controller also from Paradyne. It manages 1-10 lines while monitoring line, terminal and modem problems at up to 512 locations, says the firm. Data from every network location is analysed automatically and continuously. The operator commands the network from a terminal controller keyboard. Polling and status reporting is done over a noninterfering diagnostic channel and does not affect primary data transmission, says Paradyne. The Analysis 550 is priced at £12 500. Units give remote control 'at 30 m' Two modem pair eliminators have been developed by Tech-Nel Data Products of the UK. Tech-Nel claims that remote data terminals can be linked to front-end processors 30 m away, for about one-tenth the cost of a conventional pair of back-toback modem connections. The EL-500 is a standalone unit. The EL/20 is the rack-mounted version. Both give synchronous or asynchronous operation, half or full duplex. Transmission speeds go up to 19200 baud. Interface delays and control conditions are switch selectable. (Tech-Nel Data Products

Backplane is based on multilayer structure VMEbus backplanes have been released by UK firm Lynx Business Machines. The backplanes come in nine- and 20-slot versions with press fit DIN connectors. Both versions have a multilayer construction. Earth planes are buried and signal tracks are confined to the outer layers. Intersignal ground tracks are also included. ACKFAI L, SYSFAIL, SYSRESETand power and ground are brought to the top of the board by the inclusion

of an additional five-pin connector. The 96-way DIN connector installed allows test connections with the bus. Jumper areas are provided on the rear of the backplane for interrupt acknowledge and bus grant acknowledge signals. J2 backplanes for 32-bit operation are also available, says Lynx. (Lynx

PC gets backup system Winchester-disc maker Priam has released a data storage and backup subsystem, with connector kits to link with the IBM PC and the Apple Lisa. DataTower has an 86 Mbyte Winchester disc drive, a 45 Mbyte streaming tape drive and an integrated tape and disc controller. Error detection and correction are incorporated without loading the host CPU, says Priam. The subsystem can be used to back up networks or databases without interrupting processing, adds the firm.
