Micro film The mysteries of microprocessors, their manufacture and application are explained in a new film produced by the Centre for Educational Practice in Strathclyde University. The film, 'Chips for everyone - an introduction to microprocessors', is aimed mainly at university undergraduates and senior school pupils, but copies of the film have now been bought or hired by several noneducational organizations, including the National Science Museum in London, the National Computer Centre in Manchester, Strathclyde Regional Council's Department o.f Computer Services and MotoroJa. 'Chips for everyone' shows the clinical conditions in which microprocessors are manufactured and explains in general terms the high technology that underlies the process. Examples of microprocessors in operation are taken from industry and commerce, medicine, education and leisure. Because of the success of the film, the film-making team, lead by director Gordon Thomson and writer Dr lan Sommerville, are working on two more films on the subject.

Barclays chair Barclays Bank is to endow a new £250 000 'Barclays Chair in Microprocessor Applications in Industry' at Manchester University. Barclays already had working links with the University's Department of Computer Science, which would be strengthened
in future. The bank's endowment is a firm commitment over the next ten years. Mr. Brian Pearse, a Barclays general manager, said: 'There are three reasons why we are taking this action. It will provide British industry with more highly trained experts in the application of microprocessors to industrial development and so help the modernization of industry in this country. It will establish an expert advisory service for British industry at Manchester University for solving problems of microprocessor application. Growth of microprocessors will involve Barclays in decision taking on provision of finance for microprocessor development and application. Our link with the Manchester University Department of CompJ,ter Science will ensure - and this is an agreement between us -- that Barclays are regularly advised of latest practical developments in this fast expanding industry'.
